Placements24 is seeking a Senior Computational Biologist to join the Port Elizabeth research team. The role focuses on analyzing large-scale omics data and building computational tools to reveal biological insights that can guide therapeutic strategies.

The candidate will collaborate with experimental scientists, implement robust pipelines, and contribute to the strategic direction of computational efforts in Port Elizabeth.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Computer Science, or related quantitative field.
  • Minimum 7 years applying computational methods to biological problems.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, R, or Perl with relevant scientific libraries.
  • Solid understanding of molecular biology, genetics, and systems biology concepts.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux environments, scripting, and version control systems (Git).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to communicate complex findings to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement computational biology algorithms and pipelines for high-throughput data.
  • Perform statistical analysis, data mining, and machine learning on omics datasets (RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, single-cell).
  • Collaborate with experimental scientists to design studies, interpret results, and generate hypotheses.
  • Curate, manage, and visualize large biological datasets to facilitate data exploration and discovery.
  • Develop and maintain robust code and documentation for reproducibility and scalability.
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of computational efforts within the research group in Port Elizabeth.

About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Computational Biologist to join their innovative research team in Port Elizabeth . This role is critical for analyzing and interpreting large-scale biological datasets, including genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics, to drive scientific discovery. You will develop and apply advanced computational tools and statistical methods to uncover novel biological insights, contributing to the understanding of complex diseases and the development of new therapeutic strategies. The ideal candidate will possess strong programming skills and a deep understanding of biological systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement computational biology algorithms and pipelines for the analysis of high-throughput biological data.
