About the Role

Our client, a dynamic biotechnology firm specializing in therapeutic protein development, located in the bustling hub of Randburg, Gauteng , is seeking an experienced Senior Biophysical Chemist. This role is integral to understanding and optimizing the biophysical properties of therapeutic proteins throughout their development lifecycle. You will employ a suite of biophysical techniques to characterize protein structure, stability, aggregation, and interactions, providing critical data to guide formulation, manufacturing, and clinical development. This is a hybrid position, allowing for essential hands-on laboratory work at our Randburg facility, complemented by remote work for data analysis, reporting, and collaborative discussions. The ideal candidate will possess extensive expertise in various biophysical methods and a profound understanding of protein chemistry and engineering. You will be a key contributor, working alongside molecular biologists, formulation scientists, and process engineers to ensure the quality and efficacy of our innovative biologic therapeutics.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and execute biophysical studies to characterize therapeutic proteins using techniques such as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Circular Dichroism (CD), Analytical Ultracentrifugation (AUC), and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC).
• Develop and validate methods for assessing protein stability, aggregation, and conformational integrity.
• Analyze and interpret complex biophysical data, generating comprehensive reports and actionable insights.
• Collaborate with formulation scientists to develop stable and effective protein formulations.
• Work with process development teams to ensure that manufacturing processes maintain protein integrity.
• Troubleshoot experimental issues and propose innovative solutions for protein characterization challenges.
• Stay current with the latest advancements in biophysical characterization techniques and protein science.
• Contribute to regulatory filings by providing robust biophysical data and supporting documentation.
• Mentor junior scientists and contribute to the scientific direction of the biophysics group.
• Maintain a well-equipped and organized laboratory environment in Randburg .

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with a strong focus on protein characterization.
• A minimum of 5 years of post-doctoral or industrial experience in biophysical characterization of proteins, particularly biologics.
• Extensive hands-on experience with a range of biophysical techniques (DSC, CD, AUC, ITC, DLS, SEC-MALS, etc.).
• Proven ability to develop, optimize, and validate biophysical assays.
• Strong understanding of protein structure, stability, folding, and aggregation phenomena.
• Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation using specialized software.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a systematic approach to experimental design.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience in reporting results and contributing to publications.
• Ability to work effectively in a hybrid environment, managing time and priorities efficiently.
• Familiarity with biologics development and regulatory requirements is advantageous.
