Job description

Our client, a leading specialist in fuel retail infrastructure and forecourt design, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Architect to lead the design, planning, and execution of fuel stations, forecourts, and associated retail facilities across South Africa.

This is a senior technical and design leadership role suited to an experienced architect who combines strong creative and technical capability with a detailed understanding of petroleum site layouts, regulatory frameworks, and construction principles. The successful candidate will oversee all design stages — from concept development to final construction drawings — ensuring functional, safe, and visually distinctive forecourt environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the architectural design of fuel stations, forecourts, canopies, convenience stores, and related facilities.
  • Develop concept, schematic, and detailed design packages, including site layouts, elevations, and 3D visualisations.
  • Coordinate with engineers, contractors, and clients to ensure that designs meet technical, safety, and environmental requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with petroleum, fire safety, and environmental regulations, as well as local municipal by-laws.
  • Oversee site layout planning including traffic flow, pump placement, access points, and tank positioning.
  • Manage municipal and environmental submissions, ensuring timely approvals.
  • Conduct site inspections and review work during construction to maintain design integrity and quality.
  • Mentor and guide junior architects and draughtspersons, fostering technical and professional growth within the team.
  • Liaise directly with clients and project managers to ensure design solutions align with business and operational needs.
  • Integrate sustainability principles and innovative design approaches in all projects.
Requirements
  • Master’s Degree in Architecture.
  • Minimum 8–10 years’ experience in architectural design, with at least 5 years working on fuel stations or forecourt developments.
  • Professional registration with SACAP (PrArch or candidate in final stages).
  • Strong experience in AutoCAD and Revit (ArchiCAD or BIM experience advantageous).
  • Proven ability to produce high-quality design and technical documentation for fuel retail or commercial construction projects.
  • In-depth understanding of petroleum infrastructure, fire and safety codes, and environmental design regulations.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and coordination skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
