Job summary

A mining company is seeking a Section Mining Manager to lead and direct mining operations in Gauteng. The successful candidate will ensure safety, productivity, and compliance with legislation. Applicants should possess applicable engineering qualifications and a Mine Manager Certificate of Competency, along with at least 2 years of experience as a Mine Overseer in production environments.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years appointed as a Mine Overseer in a production environment.
  • Must provide leadership and direction to achieve HSE, cost, and volume performance.
  • Must be able to obtain a valid Certificate of Fitness.

Responsibilities

  • Execute policies and safe practices for mining operations.
  • Formulate and own production plans to meet mine targets.
  • Direct and coordinate production processes to deliver RoM.

The role:

Provide leadership and direction to achieve HSE, cost and volume performance in your area of responsibility by effectively coordinating all production processes, including topsoil stripping, drilling and blasting, dragline exposure, truck and shovel operations, coal load and haul, pit dewatering and rehabilitation.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
  • Execute the policies, procedures and safe practices required to mine safely in your area of responsibility.
  • Formulate and own short‑ and medium‑term production plans to achieve mine targets.
  • Provide input to LOM planned objectives and budget, driving performance and implementation accordingly.
  • Identify, build, and develop production talent and capability, including a pipeline for key positions.
  • Direct and coordinate production processes—including stripping, drilling and blasting, dragline exposure, truck and shovel exposure, contractors’ coal extraction, and mine dewatering and rehabilitation—to deliver RoM to the correct destination as per plan.
  • Manage the execution of all mining activities in line with mining, environmental legislation and licenses.
  • Build, support and maintain healthy diverse internal and external relationships, and implement remedial actions where required to achieve organisational goals.
  • Establish and implement effective risk management processes and engage relevant stakeholders to ensure compliance with requirements.
Requirements:
  • Engineering (BTech) or Advanced Diploma; B Eng; National Diploma in Coal Mining Engineering.
  • Mine Manager Certificate of Competency (Coal) – completed.
  • Minimum 2 years appointed as a Mine Overseer in a production environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in organisational improvement.
  • In‑depth knowledge of mining processes.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation (MHSA, HSE, Labour, etc.).
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and SAP.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • In possession or able to obtain a valid Certificate of Fitness.
Advantageous:
  • Mine Overseer certificate.
  • Draglines and drill‑ and blast experience.
  • Postgraduate Degree (Honours / MBA).
  • Coaching and Mentoring.
  • S3 ORMP.
