JOB PURPOSE
- The Second Engineer is second in command of the Engineering Department and is in all respects responsible for conducting his duties in the best interest of the company.
- The Second Engineer shall keep himself continuously informed of all matters concerning operation, maintenance and repair enabling him to take over from the Chief Engineer in cases of necessity and/or emergency.
FUNCTION
- Perform engineer room watch-keeping duties when required including the maintenance of all machinery on deck and in the engine room as directed by the Chief Engineer.
- Manage stores, spares, lube oils, and chemicals, monitoring consumption and inventory to ensure minimum requirements are met and checking deliveries from suppliers.
- Instruct and supervise the maintenance and use of safety, environmental protection, firefighting, first aid and life‑saving equipment onboard.
- Prepare and monitor work plans for other engineers and engine ratings, and periodically review work‑/rest‑hour planning for all personnel to ensure compliance.
- Ensure his own work and rest hour planning complies with fatigue‑management requirements.
- Motivate engineers and crew and create a safe working environment, optimizing utilization of allocated resources.
- Use environmentally friendly cleaning materials and ensure chemicals are used safely and responsibly.
- Operate propulsion and auxiliary machinery, maintaining the vessel’s machinery and equipment per the Chief Engineer’s instructions.
- Issue orders and instructions in a clear and concise manner.
- Understand the importance of briefing and debriefing to ensure efficient teamwork, and develop skills and confidence of junior team members.
TRAINING OF SUPERVISED PERSONNEL
- Orientation.

- Proper use of tools and equipment.
- Standard maintenance and operating practices.
- Familiarity with the latest MARPOL requirements and legislation.
- Compliance with International Health & Safety Regulations.
REQUIREMENTS
- Be a South African citizen and hold a valid passport.
- Hold a valid SAMSA Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Second Engineering Officer STCW Reg III/2.
- Have at least two years experience as a Third Engineering Officer STCW Reg. III/2 and/or one year as Second Engineering Officer STCW Reg. III/2.
- Hold a valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (without restrictions or limitations).
- Possess technical and problem‑solving skills, including technical report writing.
- Resolve environmental concerns and improve procedures relating to pollution prevention.
- Realise the need for management systems and procedures, especially in areas of emergency, malfunctions, safety, contingency planning and environmental protection.
- Demonstrate personnel management and safety awareness.
- Be fluent in written and spoken English.
- Follow company instructions and procedures, delivering results to meet client expectations.
- Be a team player with a professional work ethic, managing a team onboard and working closely with management.
- Comply with strict company and industry SHEQ standards and working habits.
- Adhere to company confidentiality requirements and a strict zero‑tolerance Alcohol & Drug Policy.
LEGISLATIVE COMPLIANCE
- Compliance with the Merchant Shipping Act (MSA), MLC (Maritime Labour Convention) and STCW.
- Compliance with POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act).
- Compliance with the Marine Living Resources Act (MLRA) 18 of 1998.
- Have no criminal record with SAPS and be willing to undergo a background check paid for by SAMSA MSP.
- Adhere to strict company confidentiality requirements.
- Adhere to a strict zero‑tolerance Alcohol & Drug Policy.
