Job description

The SAMRC is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and motivated Scientist to support the operations of the Centre for advanced training and Innovative research (CATIR) programme based at the SAMRC Pretoria laboratories.

This role is vital to the successful delivery of training and research activities in molecular biology, next generation sequencing, biomanufacturing and related fields. The scientist will be responsible for running the CATIR training programme, managing laboratory operations, providing technical training, supporting quality assurance, and assisting with research projects.

Key Responsibilities / Learning Outcomes
  • Coordination and delivery of hands‑on training modules
  • Technical oversight and daily management of laboratory activities
  • Development and maintenance of SOPs and compliance systems
  • Contribution to data analysis, reporting, and research outputs
  • Liaison with internal and external stakeholders and partners

Duration of contract : 5 years

Remuneration : Remuneration commensurate with experience and qualifications

Core Requirements
  • 4‑year qualification / Hons (Biochemistry / Microbiology or equivalent)
  • Hands‑on laboratory experience in cell culture, PCR, western blotting, ELISA
  • Prior involvement in teaching, training, or lab‑based short courses
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in a related industry (biotech / pharma)
Advantageous
  • MSc (Biochemistry / Microbiology or equivalent)
  • Sanger and next generation sequencing experience
  • Driver's License
