Job description

Purpose of the position

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the design, installation, factory acceptance testing and commissioning process of the entire Substation Automation System on projects.

Candidate Team

The candidate will also form part of a SCADA Team that will service other offices from the Johannesburg office.

Core Knowledge

The candidate should have a good knowledge of substation automation systems and all the sub-components, including HMIs, Tele-control applications, telecommunication, cyber securities and remote engineering access, etc.

Qualifications / Experience

BSc / BEng / BTech in Electrical Engineering as a minimum.

3-4 years' experience within a similar role.

Computer literate in MS Excel and MS Word.

Excellent document writing skills.

Brownfield and / or Greenfield Projects.

Valid driver's license.

Fault finding on Serial and Ethernet networks.

Fiber optic networks.

Experience in at least one of the following sectors : renewables, transmission & distribution, power generation, mining.

Experience in the following fields will be advantages : Eskom SCADA and Telecommunications systems Renewable Energy Projects SCADA experience SCADA and telecommunication systems of utilities in one or more countries in the rest of SADC.

Required outputs and responsibilities

Designing of HMI, RTU and ODF Panels.

Creating of Communication Architecture Layouts.

Assisting Project Managers with Proposals, which includes : Input on Manhours for SCADA Activities / Tasks on Projects.

Technical Write-ups for Proposal documentations.

Requesting budget quotations from Suppliers / Sub-contractors.

Compiling of Request for Quotation (RFQ) Documentation.

Technically evaluating the quotations received from Supplier / Sub-contractors.

Configuring, Testing and Commissioning of Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) from a variety of vendors (SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens).

Configuring, Testing and Commissioning Substation Gateways from a variety of vendors (SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens).

Configuring, Testing and Commissioning Serial and Ethernet networks.

Programming user-based logic using IEC

• on platforms requiring custom automation and control functionalities.

Configuring, Testing and Commissioning of protection relays for Substation Automation System, including Communication and Time Synchronisation parameters.

Implementing secure industrial networking solutions in a substation environment using several telecommunication technologies, including TCP / IP, RSTP, VLAN's, Routers, Firewalls, VPN access, IPSec, etc.

Conducting Factory and Site Acceptance testing of complete Substation Automation and Control Systems.

Creating Functional Design Specifications Documents (FDS), Detail Design Specification Documents (DDS), Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and Site Acceptance Test (SAT) Files.
