Company Overview

Kumba Iron Ore is a leading producer of high‑grade iron ore. Our operations span exploration, mining, processing, blending, shipping, marketing and selling. In South Africa we operate in the Northern Cape, Rosebank (Gauteng) and Saldanha Bay (Western Cape).

Job Description

As an Operations Sampler you will perform all preparation and testing activities of ore samples to ensure that results accurately reflect the original product and the integrity of geological data.

Key Responsibilities

Safety, Health and Environment

  • Adhere to all health and safety practices.
  • Promote good housekeeping to maintain a controlled risk environment.
  • Participate in SLAMs, HPHs, relevant risk assessments and close out safety actions.

Performance Delivery – Sample Coordination

  • Collect samples from open pit operations on an ad‑hoc basis.
  • Conduct sampling processes following company policies and procedures within specified timeframes.
  • Capture and record all relevant sampling criteria.
  • Crush and split samples according to specified sizes for quality assurance.
  • Ensure proper sampling from all exploration areas, including the red permit region.
  • Delineation (Applicable to Production Geology):
    • Walk on muck piles for delineation of blast blocks.
    • Prepare delineation boards and poles with stickers to indicate material classes.
    • Peg RC drill holes in the pit.

Equipment Operation

  • Operate the LDV for the movement of samples and materials as needed.
  • Use crushing and splitting equipment effectively to prepare ore samples for quality checks.
  • Maintain all equipment through regular cleaning and inspection.

Sample Handling

  • Load and unload sample boxes, ensuring accurate painting and labelling.
  • Pack sample boxes into racks according to standard procedures.

Housekeeping

  • Perform housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and contamination‑free environment.
  • Check and clean equipment regularly to prevent pollution.

General Assistance

  • Provide support to the line manager and colleagues as necessary.
  • Photograph data collection.
  • Assist with any ad‑hoc tasks as required.

Outputs

  • Conformance to instructions, timely and accurate demarcation preparation.
  • Operate LDV and use a PC/Laptop to capture data as required.
  • Accuracy of labelling, sampling data, timely sampling and delivery of samples.
  • Conformance to standards, regulations and rules; storing of samples; perform tasks using applicable equipment.
  • Cleanliness of work environment and equipment, safety rating, incident/accident rate, compliance, demand for assistance, number of complaints.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12.
  • Licence to operate LDVs.
  • SA Driver's Licence.

Technical Knowledge

  • 2‑3 years of relevant experience in sampling in the mining industry.
  • Understand laboratory equipment and chemical substances.
