Job summary

A leading reinsurance company in Cape Town is seeking a Reserving Actuary on a 12-month contract. In this role, you will support the valuation team with financial reporting. The ideal candidate is a qualified actuary with minimum 2 years of experience and strong communication skills. Proficiency in Excel, R, and SQL is highly advantageous. This role requires collaboration across time zones and peak work during quarter ends.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an actuarial analyst, preferably in a valuation role.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of reporting standards such as AASB17.
  • Able to work during peak periods at quarter and calendar year ends.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Australian Appointed Actuary and the valuation team in financial reporting.
  • Contribute to the management and validation of modelling data for calculations.
  • Run and maintain existing actuarial models to streamline legacy systems.

General Reinsurance, Cape Town Branch (a subsidary of General Reinsurance AG) is offering an opportunity for Reservin g Actuary - 12 Month Contrac t in our Life Australia, UK, SA, Canada division.

Key Responsibilities
  • In this role you will be supporting the Australian Appointed Actuary and the valuation team with statutory financial and capital reporting requirements by performing several key steps in the valuation process.
Key Accountabilities
  • Maintenance and improvement of data preparation process for actuarial models, with particular focus on the Open Claims reserve data preparation.
  • Contributing to the management and validation of modelling data, ensuring its accuracy and integrity for calculations.
  • Running and maintenance of existing actuarial models with the aim of assisting the business to streamline the use of legacy systems.
  • Regulatory and management reporting under various accounting and capital regimes including generation of cash flow projections on the various bases.
  • Assisting with the update of best estimate assumptions and the impact assessments of proposed changes.
  • Assisting with the quarterly capital calculations and updating required inputs.
  • Monitoring of individual client company results.
  • Contribution to valuation projects, including process improvement other ad-hoc projects that arise from time-to-time
Requirements
  • Being available to liaise and work with colleagues in Australian time zones.
  • Peak work periods at quarter and calendar year ends.
Qualifications & Experience

The essential requirements and underlying capabilities to be effective in this role include:

  • Qualified Actuary.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an actuarial analyst, preferably in a valuation role.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the insurance and reinsurance industry, including AASB17 and reporting standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with actuarial software modeling, including coding experience.
  • Able to work independently but collaboratively in a small team.
  • Contribute to and promote a positive and collaborative culture, with ability to follow through, show initiative and a commitment to quality.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, R and SQL highly advantageous.
  • Experience with Mo.Net and/or Prophet or GGY AXIS advantageous.
