About the Role

The Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan's leading international newspapers, is seeking a Research Coordinator for its Johannesburg bureau.

This role is ideal for a motivated early-career professional with 1–2 years of experience in research, journalism, or communications who wants to grow in international media.

The successful candidate will support correspondents in covering political, economic, and social developments across sub-Saharan Africa, providing research, coordination, and logistical assistance for reporting and interviews.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor daily news and developments across sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Conduct background research, fact-checking, and prepare concise research briefs.
  • Support in arranging interviews with government officials, diplomats, NGOs, academics, and community leaders.
  • Assist with planning and logistics for reporting trips and fieldwork.
  • Draft correspondence such as interview requests to embassies, government offices, and organizations.
  • Maintain and expand contact lists relevant to the bureau's coverage.
  • Provide administrative support to ensure smooth bureau operations.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Political Science, International Relations, Communications, or a related field.
  • 1–2 years of relevant work experience (e.g., research, journalism, communications, NGO, or policy environment).
  • Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in African politics, economics, and international affairs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in English required; proficiency in Japanese, French, Portuguese, or an African language is an advantage.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally within the region.
