Job description

A leading institutional investment manager, responsible for one of the largest and most diverse asset portfolios on the African continent, is seeking an experienced Research Analyst (Resources) to join its specialist investment team.

The role sits within a high-performance environment that requires exceptional analytical depth, sector expertise, and the ability to influence investment decision-making at scale.This opportunity is suited only to mid-senior investment professionals with proven experience in the resources sector, strong financial modelling capabilities, and the ability to formulate differentiated insights that drive portfolio performance.

Applicants without sector-specific experience or financial-markets exposure will not be considered.

Purpose of the Role

To deliver in-house equity research within the Resources sector, providing informed investment recommendations to the Equity team.

The role includes maintaining and forecasting key commodity views, developing and updating equity models, and contributing to the organisation's house view on the sector.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Finance or Science
  • 3–5 years relevant experience in financial markets
  • FAIS RE5, RE1 and RE3 (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
  • Postgraduate degree (Science, Commerce, Finance), MBA, CFA or CA(SA)
  • BSc Engineering, BSc Geology or related qualification
  • Direct experience in the mining, oil and gas, or broader resources environment
  • Background in investment banking, private equity, or equity research
  • Strong understanding of commodities, cost drivers and macro‑economic linkages
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain commodity forecasts and inform the internal house view
  • Produce high-quality investment recommendations with detailed, defendable theses
  • Build, update and customise complex valuation models
  • Engage closely with sector heads and the Listed Equities team to debate investment ideas
  • Provide timely commentary on sector news, macro developments and market movements
  • Monitor stock and portfolio exposures, ensuring alignment with investment strategy
