Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Sustainable Agriculture Lead for a globally influential non-profit. Working remote-first from Mossel Bay or another location, you will shape policy development and advocacy at national and international levels to advance sustainable farming and food security.

You will conduct policy research, develop evidence-based recommendations, engage with government, NGOs, and international bodies, and contribute to strategic plans and fundraising proposals.

Qualifications

• Master's degree or Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Environmental Policy, Public Policy, or a related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in policy analysis, advocacy, or program management within the agricultural or environmental sector.
• Strong understanding of sustainable agriculture principles, practices, and challenges.
• Proven experience in policy research, development, and advocacy, preferably with a track record of influencing policy change.
• Excellent analytical, research, and writing skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information.
• Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, suited for remote engagement.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team setting.
• Experience in engaging with diverse stakeholders, including government, civil society, and the private sector.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of other official South African languages is a plus.
• Passion for environmental sustainability and food security.

Responsibilities

• Conduct in-depth research on current agricultural policies and their impact on sustainability, environment, and livelihoods.
• Develop evidence-based policy recommendations and advocacy strategies.
• Engage with government officials, legislative bodies, and international organizations to promote sustainable agricultural policies.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with partner organizations, NGOs, and farmer groups.
• Organize and facilitate policy dialogues, workshops, and advocacy campaigns.
• Prepare policy briefs, reports, and public statements on sustainable agriculture issues.
• Monitor policy developments and analyze their potential implications for the agricultural sector.
• Represent the organization in relevant forums, conferences, and public consultations.
• Contribute to the development of strategic plans and fundraising proposals related to policy advocacy.
• Stay informed about emerging trends and challenges in sustainable agriculture globally and within South Africa.
