Placements24 seeks a Senior Research Scientist specializing in Genomics for a fully remote role supporting South Africa operations, including Paarl. You will lead the design, execution, and analysis of large-scale genomic studies, collaborating with dispersed teams of scientists, clinicians and bioinformaticians to drive research from concept to publication.

The ideal candidate holds a PhD with 6+ years of genomics experience, and is proficient in PLINK, GATK, and Hail, with strong R/Python

Qualifications

• PhD in Genomics, Bioinformatics, Genetics, or a related quantitative life science field.
• Minimum of 6 years of research experience in human genomics with strong data analysis and interpretation.
• Proficiency with standard genomic analysis software and pipelines (PLINK, GATK, Hail).
• Experience with R or Python for data analysis and strong communication for remote collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Design and manage complex genomic research projects, including study design, sample selection, and data acquisition.
• Analyze large-scale genomic datasets (e.g., WGS, exome, SNP arrays) using advanced statistical and bioinformatics tools.
• Develop and implement novel analytical approaches for variant calling, association studies, and population genetics.
• Interpret genomic findings and translate them into biologically meaningful insights and potential clinical applications.

About the Role

This critical role will involve leading the design, execution, and analysis of large-scale genomic studies to uncover genetic variations associated with complex diseases and traits. You will collaborate extensively with a geographically dispersed team of scientists, clinicians, and bioinformaticians, driving research initiatives from conceptualization to publication. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of genomic technologies, statistical genetics, and possesses exceptional communication skills necessary for effective remote collaboration, contributing to groundbreaking discoveries in human health.
