Job summary

Nedbank is seeking a data engineer to build and maintain data pipelines and models that feed data marts, reports and analytics. The role requires strong SAS, Netezza and SQL skills within a banking data environment, and the ability to translate technical outputs into business insights.

You will collaborate with Finance, Risk and Modelling teams, drive data quality controls and automate data prep tasks, helping ensure compliant, high-quality data flows across reports and analytics environments.

Qualifications

To build and maintain data pipelines and models that feed data marts, reports and related analytics. The ideal candidate is technically strong in Netezza, SAS, and SQL, understands the banking data environment, and can balance data engineering precision with business understanding. We are searching for a candidate that will act as a bridge between technical teams, finance and business stakeholders, ensuring data flows are efficient, transparent and of high standard.

Job Responsibilities

Data Engineering & Modelling

• Develop and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines for reporting and analytics.
• Build data marts and data models supporting business and advanced analytics.
• Optimize SQL queries and Netezza performance for large financial datasets.
• Maintain documented, reusable transformation logic.

Data Quality & Controls

• Design and implement data validation checks for completeness and accuracy.
• Support data lineage and audit requirements for regulatory reporting.
• Apply strong version control and testing practices.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

• Work closely with Finance, Risk, and Modelling teams.
• Translate technical outputs into business insights.
• Act as a subject matter expert (SME) for Netezza and analytics best practices.
• Provide mentorship on SQL and data modelling.

Technology & Process Improvement

• Drive best practices in ELT/ETL development within Netezza, SAS and other tools within the bank.
• Collaborate with IT and infrastructure to ensure optimal data performance.
• Automate manual data preparation tasks.

Essential Qualifications - NQF Level

• Matric / Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate
• Advanced Diplomas/National 1st Degrees

Preferred Qualification

3-year qualification in a Mathematical related BSc,Engineering,CFA, FRM, CQF

Minimum Experience Level

• 2–5 years of experience in banking or financial data environments.
• Strong SAS for data extraction and transformation.
• Knowledge of ETL/ELT and data visualization tools (Power BI).

Technical / Professional Knowledge

• Demonstrates foundational understanding of quantitative methods and apply them to defined tasks; more complex analyses are completed with guidance and supervision.
• Strong knowledge of probability and statistics
• Technical understanding or exposure to statistical analysis and models
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to translate complex data and model / solution outcomes into business insights.
• Proficiency or familiarity in programming languages (e.g. Python, R, C++, Java, SQL, SAS, VBA, MATLAB, etc.), with the ability to translate algorithms and mathematical or statistical models into flexible and scalable coding logic
• Technical understanding or exposure to big data concepts, data structures, data storage, data extraction/mining.
• Technical understanding or exposure of model lifecycle management i.e. development, validation, implementation, monitoring.
• Technical understanding and exposure to AI/ML techniques and model explainability tools (e.g., SHAP, LIME etc.).
