County Fair, a division of Astral Operations Ltd has this opportunity for a qualified Quality Control Officer to join the team based in Epping II, Cape Town.

The purpose of this role is to ensure that food products and facilities meet the standards as set by the company and regulatory authorities.

Qualifications and experience required:
  • Completed Grade 12 and a tertiary qualification in Food Technology/BSc. Food Science
  • Sound knowledge of FSSC 22000, GMP requirements, relevant guidelines and Quality Management Systems
  • Knowledge of statistical process control
  • 5 years’ experience in the FMCG and manufacturing environment
Other requirements:
  • Computer literacy at an intermediate to advanced level (MS Excel, MS Word, MS Outlook and MS PowerPoint)
  • Must be fluent in English and any other official South African language (knowledge of other languages would be advantageous)
  • Key requirements include being commercially sound, deadline driven and having attention to detail
  • The ideal candidate should be hardworking, honest, self-motivated/self-starter, disciplined and be able to work under extreme pressure;
  • It is essential that the candidate have a passion for implementing and maintaining a continuous workplace improvement program (20 Keys).
  • The ideal candidate must be proactive, have good management, communication and interpersonal skills as well as problem solving and planning skills;
  • Code 08 driver’s license and reliable transport is essential.
Primary responsibilities and accountability of the role:
  • Maintain Quality and Food Safety in the facility as per FSSC 22000, customer and legal requirements
  • Manage Quality Controllers
  • Daily plant visits and provide assistance to the team as required
  • Review records, capture KPI’s and action any non-conformances that was unresolved on a daily basis.
  • Update all trends necessary for Quality purposes (Including CCP’s, PRP’s, Quality KPI’s, etc)
  • Assist management with continuous improvement initiatives to reduce customer complaints and repetitive audit non-conformances
  • Ensure samples/ swabs are conducted and sent to the laboratory according to the sample plan. Ensure all non-conforming results are communicated, investigated and re-sampling handled as per procedure.
  • Conduct monthly internal audits according to the audit plan to ensure all departments are audited as per set frequency and all PRP’s are assessed.
  • Compile action plan and verify close out of actions.
  • Conduct checks on maintenance to ensure quality checks are followed.
  • Conduct checks on cleaning service provider.
  • Conduct checks on pest control service provider.
  • Assist in conducting mock recalls as per APD requirements.
  • Maintain calibration schedule of equipment and ensure calibrations are conducted before or on due date.
  • Maintain training schedule and ensure training is done as per training plan.
  • Document and implement master cleaning schedule with SOP’s for the Epping processing plant and the New Market Cold Store
  • Close-out and verification of effectiveness of NCR’s.
  • Submit monthly quality reports to the Group Quality Manager
  • Ensure customer complaints are closed off within a 48-hour period and that reduction is driven
  • Review documents (procedures/Work Instructions and form templates) when required
  • Assist in external audits.
