SPECIAL RISKS PROJECT MANAGER - RUSTENBURG
Seeking a dynamic and capable Project Manager to lead the planning, execution, and delivery of projects in the special risk environment, ensuring they meet strategic objectives and operational benchmarks. This role requires a well-rounded individual who can manage budgets, coordinate with diverse stakeholders, and uphold regulatory and safety standards, all while contributing to business development efforts.
Responsibilities
Project Planning and Coordination
- Translate proposals and service requirements into detailed project plans with clear milestones and resource allocation.
- Coordinate with operations to finalise timelines and align deliverables across internal teams and external partners.
- Engage service providers and sub-contractors, ensuring all parties understand roles, expectations, and compliance obligations.
- Continuously adjust plans based on progress reviews and operational input.
Execution and Oversight
- Oversee project implementation, driving progress across multiple initiatives while monitoring delivery against agreed timeframes.
- Proactively identify delays, risks, and inefficiencies, and implement course-corrective measures.
- Maintain comprehensive project records, including site reports and client communications.
- Manage commissioning, testing, and formal handover processes, ensuring complete documentation and client satisfaction.
Financial and Contractual Management
- Develop and manage project budgets, controlling costs and identifying efficiency opportunities.
- Monitor financial health across projects, tracking expenditure versus forecasts and adjusting as needed to protect profitability.
- Generate client billing schedules and supplier payment valuations, maintaining contractual alignment and transparency.
Regulatory Compliance and Safety
- Promote adherence to OSHEM (Occupational Safety, Health, Environment & Management) standards across all project activities.
- Conduct compliance reviews and provide training where necessary to close knowledge gaps.
- Address all regulatory inspection requirements and resolve any non-compliance issues promptly.
Client Engagement and Business Development
- Support sales teams by contributing technical insight into proposals and attending pre-sales meetings when needed.
- Identify opportunities for follow-on work or additional services while engaging with clients throughout project lifecycles.
Performance Reporting
- Regularly report on project progress, financial outcomes, and subcontractor performance, drawing insights from trends and variances.
- Provide leadership with strategic input to guide decision-making and resource allocation.
Requirements and Skills
Education and Qualifications
- National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Technology, or related technical discipline and advantage
- Must have Construction Management qualification - requirement
- Fire Protection qualification (advantageous):
- ASIB Competency Certificate, or
- SAQCC Fire Detection and Gas Suppression Registration (preferably Category A or B), or
- IAAI, NFPA or similar international accreditation relevant to fire systems.
- Project Management certification (preferred):
- PMP (Project Management Professional)
- Prince2 Foundation / Practitioner, or
- Equivalent formal project management training.
Experience
- Minimum 5–7 years' experience in managing medium-to-large projects within the fire protection or mechanical services sector with specific reference to special risks / mining environment
- Demonstrated experience with sprinkler systems, fire detection, suppression systems, and associated infrastructure in commercial, industrial or special-risk environments.
- Hands-on exposure to the design, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover of fire protection systems in accordance with South African and international codes.
Knowledge and Technical Skills
- In-depth knowledge of SANS 10400, SANS 10287, relevant FM standards, ASIB standards, and other relevant fire system regulations.
- Understanding of OSHEM compliance requirements specific to fire installations in construction or industrial settings.
- Competent in reviewing fire system designs, hydraulic calculations, technical specifications, and commissioning protocols.
- Proven ability to manage and supervise subcontractors, service providers, and inspection authorities (e.g., ASIB inspections, municipal approvals).
- Familiar with project budgeting, claims, variation orders, and profitability tracking.
Licensing and Professional Registration
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
- SAQCC Registration in a relevant category (Sprinklers, Detection, or Gas) – strongly preferred or required depending on role focus.
