A leading project management firm in South Africa is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead project development and ensure successful delivery in heavy industry. The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 3-5 years of relevant experience in project management, with strong skills in risk management and stakeholder engagement.

Job description
Introduction

To direct and manage project development for duration of project phase.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop project plans and estimate resources needed to achieve project goals. Manage project delivery to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Proactively manage changes in project scope, project risks and devise contingency plans.
  • Obtain environmental approvals from government departments.
  • Audit projects and programmes for project progress against agreed tolerances.
  • Audit project support offices to ensure adherence to Corporate Governance with regards to processes, systems, guidelines and templates.
  • Update knowledge of project management best practice.
  • Participate in evaluation of discipline‑specific standards, principles and practice to enable planning, design and implementation of project outcomes that support business strategy.
  • Contribute to development and implementation of an appropriate approach to knowledge management for discipline in line with business needs.
  • Provide and participate in governance systems for best practice.
  • Create and execute project work plans and revise to meet changing project needs and requirements.
  • Identify resources needed and assign individual responsibilities.
  • Take action to mitigate and manage risks that can impact on project.
  • Identify and manage project dependencies and critical path.
  • Supervise and ensure execution of projects in adherence to agreed Service Level Agreements (SLA) and service delivery standards.
  • Supervise day‑to‑day operational aspects of project.
  • Ensure document control via centralised capturing system specified by the Group.
  • Ensure design consultant contracts are managed efficiently.
  • Implement controls to ensure legal compliance.
  • Apply controls to ensure legal and best practice compliance in accordance with MHSA (Mine Health and Safety Act), MPRDA (Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act), OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act) where applicable.
  • Implement effective Safety Health and Environmental (SHE) management systems for project.
  • Adhere to Enterprise Project Management (EPM) Standards and requirements of quality management systems.
  • Ensure compliance to environmental Record of Decision (RoD).
  • Provide inputs for planning and recommendations for staff to be efficiently deployed and identify areas of further development (projects and training).
  • Manage project team, coaching of staff members, promote teamwork, provide support and manage performance by creating and maintaining individual development plans of subordinates.
  • Oversee all recruitment and HR related activities and financial competency development of reporting staff.
  • Manage and ensure optimal use of budget allocated to project.
  • Ensure that effective financial modelling is done on all projects.
  • Ensure Capital Expenditure (Capex) and Operational Expenditure (Opex) estimates for projects are compiled in line with the Group standards.
  • Ensure that value engineering and assurance processes are followed as per the Group policy.
  • Continuously improve project management procedures and processes.
  • Develop and implement stakeholder management strategies for each project.
  • Manage and coordinate geosciences, mining and metallurgical inputs to projects.
  • Participate in implementation of quality management systems to ensure delivery of high quality projects.
  • Maintain and ensure healthy environment, safe operations and practices, ensuring compliance with all applicable SHE policies and procedures in line with set standards.
  • Encourage culture that focuses on safety in all operations.
  • Manage the application of new or amendments of mining rights (including mine works programs (MWP), environmental management programmes (EMPr) and social and labour plans (SLP)).
  • Manage the application of new or amendments to Integrated Water Use Licences (IWUL).
  • Demonstrate creativity, collaboration, sociability and awareness to the ecosystem.

Desired Experience & Qualification
  • Bachelor of Science: Engineering (Essential / Minimum) or B Eng (Relevant) (Essential / Minimum).
  • Gov Cert of Competence: Engineering (Recommended / Desirable).
  • Management Development Programme (Recommended / Desirable).
  • Project Management Qualification / Accreditation (Recommended / Desirable).
  • 3-5 years relevant experience in heavy industry / mining / production / maintenance or logistics / rail (Essential / Minimum).
  • 3-5 years demonstratable experience of leading a concept / PFS / BFS study in the relevant industries (Essential / Minimum).
  • 3-5 years' experience of implementation project as an Engineer / Project Manager (Essential / Minimum).
