Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Professional Lip-Reader

We hereby seek to establish a freelance panel of highly skilled and exceptionally observant Lip-readers with highly developed visual communication skills to join our team and provide essential communication support services nationwide.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret spoken language accurately by visually observing lip movements, facial expressions, and gestures in various settings (e.g., meetings, interviews, training sessions, legal proceedings).
  • Provide real‑time communication support for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Work alongside sign language interpreters or use assistive technologies when necessary.
  • Transcribe spoken content from silent video footage or live conversations with precision and discretion, particularly in forensic or legal contexts if applicable to the role.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in all interpreting activities.
Requirements
  • Proven experience as a professional Lip‑reader or in a related communication support role.
  • Formal training or certification in Speech‑Language Pathology, Audiology, Communication Pathology or a related field will be a strong advantage.
  • Active registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) will be an added advantage.
  • Exceptional visual attention, strong linguistic knowledge, and acute observational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, patience, problem‑solving abilities, and a high degree of discretion.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
