Product Development Engineer (Composite Insulators)

Our client, a leading manufacturer in the energy transmission and distribution sector, is seeking a Product Development Engineer (PDE) to join their team, on a fixed term contract. The role focuses on the development of products and manufacturing processes in line with strategic objectives, specifically on composite insulators.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver composite insulator engineering projects within cost and time limitations
  • Oversee prototype designs, technical qualification, and international testing
  • Design and implement manufacturing processes (Silicone Injection Moulding and Finishing)
  • Drive continuous improvement of product design and costing
  • Support manufacturing departments in reducing production waste
  • Provide guidance to inspection teams on incoming materials and finished product release criteria
  • Assist with supplier qualification and audit processes
  • Issue standard production drawings to suppliers
  • Contribute to tenders and customer enquiries by preparing technical submissions
  • Lead resolution of product design/operation non‑conformances and complaints
  • Conduct annual performance appraisals with direct reports and implement development plans
  • Uphold the Code of Conduct and guide team members toward acceptable standards
Requirements
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (BSc Eng preferred)
  • Professional registration with ECSA (mandatory)
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in engineering product design and manufacturing
  • Preference for candidates with experience in high‑voltage outdoor insulators
  • Exposure to the electrical power transmission and distribution industry is advantageous
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
  • Proficiency in CAD (Intermediate), FEA (Intermediate to Advanced), MS Office, SHEQX, and ERP (SYSPRO)
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001, Engineering Professions Act, Labour Laws, and risk management
  • Integrity, personal credibility, and independence
