Job summary

A leading engineering firm in Johannesburg is seeking experienced Process Manufacturing Engineers. This role involves evaluating and optimizing manufacturing processes, designing jigs and equipment, and advancing lean manufacturing practices. Candidates should have a B-Tech in Mechanical Engineering and over three years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in rail or automotive sectors.

Qualifications

We invite suitably qualified candidates to apply for the Process Manufacturing Engineer position within the Process Manufacturing Engineering Department . The position will report to the PME Manager and is based in Dunnottar, Nigel(Gauteng Province).

Job Purpose
  • The primary purpose of this job is to evaluate existing and new processes and layouts, and to configure manufacturing systems in a way that reduces costs, improves sustainability, and develops best practices within the production process.
  • Connecting and collaborating with various departments, including Manufacturing, EHS, Sourcing, Supply Chain, Quality, IT, as well as the Suppliers and Line Integrators.
Key Responsibilities
  • Review, update, and design the best jigs and equipment for the production process, and create and update the shop floor layout.
  • Define more cost-effective standard tooling for manufacturing.
  • Develop equipment specifications when necessary.
  • During the ramp‑up phase, improve process capability and production volume while maintaining and enhancing quality standards to meet the goal of producing two cars per day.
  • Develop and implement systems that optimize all phases of the production process.
  • Update the Industrial Maturity Follow‑Up (IMFU) and Equipment Maturity Follow‑Up (EMFU).
  • Develop innovative solutions and ensure projects are completed on time.
  • Maintain reliable and safe manufacturing systems while improving production rates, efficiencies, yields, costs, and changeovers.
  • Provide suggestions during incident investigations.
  • Analyze issues observed during manufacturing and create action plans using tools like QRQC.
  • Develop instruction sheets with all necessary information for the manufacturing process of each part or assembly.
  • Create rework procedures in case of poor quality.
  • Define consumable materials to be used in the manufacturing process and their quantities.
  • Process all documentation to give a make‑or‑buy view, considering the available shop floor structure and properly splitting all material between workstations.
  • Verify jigs during the manufacturing phase to ensure high‑quality parts are produced.
  • Participate in concurrent engineering or design reviews, always pushing for the best design considering Quality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD). Propose changes and improvements to be implemented in the design.
  • Create Industrial Data Sheets to analyze each installation, considering tools and devices required in the manufacturing process, EHS risk analysis, ergonomics, method time evaluation, and macro process.
  • Support method time calculation and task sequence creation.
Minimum Requirements
  • B-Tech / Degree or ND in Mechanical / Industrial Engineering.
  • 3 years + experience working in a manufacturing environment (experience in the railway industry will be advantageous).
  • Advanced knowledge of 2D (AutoCAD) and 3D CAD (CATIAV5, ProENG, etc.).
  • 3 years + experience in technical investigations, shop floor layouts, and assembly work for automotive or rail industries.
  • Line balancing experience.
  • Proven experience in industrial and lean manufacturing processes.
