About the Role

Our client, a forward-thinking telecommunications company, is seeking a highly experienced Principal Telecom Software Engineer to join their distributed engineering team. This is a fully remote position, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere within South Africa. You will be instrumental in driving the development of innovative software solutions for our next-generation network infrastructure. This role demands a deep understanding of both software engineering principles and telecommunications technologies, enabling you to design, develop, and deploy high-performance, scalable, and reliable software systems. As a Principal Engineer, you will mentor other engineers, define technical direction, and contribute significantly to the strategic roadmap of our client's software development efforts, making a tangible impact on the future of connectivity, all while enjoying the autonomy of a remote-first work environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and architecture of complex software systems for telecommunications applications, focusing on scalability, reliability, and performance.
• Develop high-quality, efficient, and maintainable code in languages such as C++, Python, or Go.
• Champion best practices in software development, including CI/CD, automated testing, and code reviews.
• Architect and implement robust APIs and microservices for network functions and management systems.
• Collaborate closely with product managers, network architects, and other engineers to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Mentor and guide junior and senior software engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex software defects and performance issues in production environments.
• Contribute to strategic technical planning and road mapping for software development initiatives.
• Evaluate and integrate third-party software components and technologies where appropriate.

Requirements

• Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• 12+ years of experience in software development, with a significant portion focused on telecommunications systems.
• Proven expertise in designing and building large-scale distributed systems.
• Strong proficiency in at least one major programming language (C++, Java, Python, Go) and associated development tools.
• In-depth knowledge of telecommunications protocols and standards (e.g., SIP, SS7, TCP/IP, LTE, 5G).
• Experience with cloud-native technologies, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and microservices architecture.
• Demonstrated leadership experience, including technical mentorship and architectural decision-making.
• Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote setting.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
