About the Role

Our client, a renowned pharmaceutical research organization, is seeking a highly accomplished Principal Scientist in Medicinal Chemistry to lead innovative drug discovery programs in Kimberley, Northern Cape. This is a challenging and rewarding role focused on designing, synthesizing, and optimizing novel small molecules with therapeutic potential. You will spearhead critical research projects, mentor a team of talented chemists, and collaborate closely with biologists and other scientists to advance drug candidates from discovery through preclinical development. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of modern synthetic organic chemistry, structure-activity relationships (SAR), and drug design principles. This position is essential for driving forward our client's pipeline of innovative medicines, making a significant impact on the future of healthcare. You will be a key figure in shaping the direction of our research efforts.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead medicinal chemistry efforts for multiple drug discovery projects, from hit identification to lead optimization.
• Design and synthesize novel chemical entities with desired pharmacological profiles.
• Develop and execute SAR studies to guide compound optimization.
• Collaborate with biologists to establish bioassays and assess compound activity.
• Work closely with computational chemists to leverage in silico design tools.
• Oversee external synthesis activities and manage CRO relationships.
• Mentor and guide junior medicinal chemists, fostering their scientific development.
• Present research findings and project updates to internal teams and management.
• Contribute to patent applications and scientific publications.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry.
• A minimum of 8 years of post-doctoral or industry experience in drug discovery.
• Demonstrated success in leading medicinal chemistry programs and delivering clinical candidates.
• Expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, including modern synthetic methodologies.
• Strong understanding of SAR, ADMET properties, and drug design principles.
• Experience with biophysical and biochemical assays for compound evaluation.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Proven ability to manage projects effectively and work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Proficiency in chemical drawing software and relevant scientific databases.
