Placements24 is seeking a Principal Mining Engineer to lead open pit operations in Sandton, Gauteng. You will drive long- and short-term mine plans, oversee design and scheduling, and optimize equipment use to boost safety and efficiency.

The role requires a Master's in Mining Engineering, 10–12 years of open pit experience, and Pr.Eng registration. You will mentor engineers, perform economic analyses, and coordinate with geotech, geology, and operations for integrated mine performance.

About the Role

Our client, a globally recognized mining corporation, is seeking an exceptional Principal Mining Engineer to lead their open pit operations based in Sandton, Gauteng . This senior strategic role will be instrumental in optimizing mine planning, production, and operational efficiency for large-scale open pit mines. The Principal Mining Engineer will provide expert technical guidance, oversee the development and implementation of mine designs, and ensure the adoption of best practices in safety, environmental management, and resource utilization. The successful candidate will possess extensive experience in open pit mine design, scheduling, equipment selection, and mine economics, along with strong leadership capabilities. Key Responsibilities

Requirements

• A Master's degree in Mining Engineering or a related field.
• A minimum of 10-12 years of progressive experience in open pit mining operations, with a significant portion in a senior engineering or management role.
• Proven expertise in mine planning software (e.g., Deswik, Vulcan, Mine2-4D) and scheduling tools.
• Strong understanding of open pit slope design, geotechnical principles, and blast design.
• Demonstrated experience in mine economics, feasibility studies, and capital project evaluation.
• Excellent knowledge of mining equipment capabilities and fleet management.
• Strong leadership, team management, and communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and drive consensus.
• Professional Engineer registration (e.g., Pr.Eng) with ECSA or equivalent is essential.
• Willingness to travel to operational sites as required.
