Job summary

Transnet SOC Ltd in South Africa seeks a port pilot licensed to STCW class 3 to guide vessels safely in harbour waters. The role requires expert navigation and local knowledge to support port operations.

You will advise the master on navigation, handle vessel movements within port limits, and ensure safety and regulatory compliance in all pilotage activities.

Qualifications

• STCW class 3 or equivalent qualification.
• Sea-going experience: min 12 months on foreign sea-going vessel.
• Tug boat master: 12 months tug handling experience to obtain a Master Port Operations.
• Knowledge of shift systems and scheduling.
• Applicable legislation & regulatory bodies (NOSA, ISO, OHS Act).
• Risk and occupational safety principles in port operations.
• Marine Operations/Services and Merchant Shipping Act knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Manoeuvre the vessel within port limits with due regard for safety of vessel, crew and environment.
• Ensure safe and efficient docking/undocking and shifting of vessels within port limits.
• Maintain operational contingency plans and use ship-handling skills and local knowledge.
• Provide the master with an efficient service and navigational guidance.

Job description

Candidate to hold a Pilot License from any South African Port.

A pilot's primary duty is to use his skill and knowledge to protect the ship from collision, grounding and other hazard by providing accurate and timely navigational advice to the vessel master.

Where so approved by the master, the pilot may be required to safely conduct the navigation and manoeuvring of the vessel whilst in pilotage waters.

The pilot is further responsible;

• For the manoeuvring of the vessel within port limits having due regard for safety of the vessel, its crew and the environment.
• Is also there to ensure the safe and efficient docking / undocking and shifting of vessels within port limit.
• Must recognise that the observance of good seamanship dictates that operational contingency plans be available at all times.
• Provide the master with an efficient service by sharing with them his professional ship handling ship skills and his local knowledge.
