Job summary

University of Pretoria invites applications for a part-time Technical Assistant (20 hours per week) in the Department of Family Medicine, School of Medicine. The role coordinates research projects, manages ethics forms, and supports postgraduate research activities.

Qualifications

  • Computer literacy with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, EndNote, Gmail and advanced Microsoft 365 skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, well organized and committed to excellence.
  • Ability to build relationships with clients and stakeholders by listening and responding to needs.
  • Ability to work under pressure without supervision and perform routine tasks accurately.
  • Excellent verbal and written language and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in work.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage all research projects and evaluate documents to be submitted.
  • Maintain updated ethics forms electronically and monitor research progress for researchers.
  • Send reminders to staff and students on renewal deadlines and assist with ethics submissions.
  • Manage publication output submissions and upload research output on InfoEd and SAMRC systems.
  • Establish a monthly tracking method for publications from planning to publication.
  • Submit articles and ISSN/DOI proofs to UP RIMS and ensure all publications are uploaded.
  • Provide annual briefings on research aspects for MMed students and guide postgraduate students.
  • Proofread and language-edit articles, manuscripts and theses per UP guidelines and assist with journal searches and funding applications.
  • Assist students with PhD committee applications and provide UP templates for theses and proposals.
  • Ensure manuscripts are submitted to accredited journals and formatted per journal styles.
  • Edit references, proofs, and guide staff toward HEA-approved and ISI-indexed journals.
  • Manage payments of journal publication fees on the UP list.
