Placements24 is seeking a seasoned Optical Network Specialist for a Stellenbosch-based hybrid role. You will design, implement, and optimize high-capacity optical networks using DWDM, CWDM, and related technologies to ensure reliability and performance.

You will configure transport devices, analyze traffic, and collaborate with engineers to integrate networks with existing infrastructure, while staying current with industry advancements and maintaining comprehensive documentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with optical network design, deployment, and maintenance.
• In-depth knowledge of DWDM, CWDM, and other optical transmission technologies.
• Proficiency in configuring and troubleshooting optical network devices from major vendors.
• Understanding of optical test equipment and measurement techniques.
• Familiarity with network protocols relevant to optical transport (e.g., OTN, Ethernet).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Experience with network planning and capacity management.
• Relevant certifications (e.g., Ciena, Infinera) are advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement optical network solutions, including DWDM systems, WDM, and point-to-point optical links.
• Configure and manage optical transport equipment such as transponders, multiplexers, and amplifiers.
• Monitor network performance, analyze traffic patterns, and optimize optical network throughput.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex optical network issues, ensuring minimal downtime.
• Perform optical power budget calculations and ensure signal integrity.

• Develop and maintain network documentation, including design schematics and configuration guides.
• Conduct testing and validation of new optical equipment and network configurations.
