Overview
Job Purpose: The Operator : Pest Control will provide undertake disinfection, pest control and fumigation activities in order to ensure effective control of insect pests and rodents onboard aircraft and within the workplace environment to comply with the provisions of Pest Control Regulations No. R98, Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of and other inherent legislations. The Operator Pest Control is primarily responsible for managing and maintaining statutory and regulatory compliance for all pest control activities across SAAT. Reporting to the Manager Medical, Health, Safety and Environment this is a highly visible position in the Medical, Health, Safety, and Environmental department and will serve as the subject matter expert.
Responsibilities
- Conduct disinfection and fumigation activities for aircraft, buildings and structures and deliver potable water samples to the laboratory.
- Plan, co-ordinate and implement a proactive & cost-effective pest management service to SAA Technical SOC Ltd and its contracted third-party customers.
- Attend to customer and stakeholder requests as per the manager instruction.
- Liaise with aircraft production control on aircraft fumigations and its availability.
- Conduct environmental health surveys at all premises, aircraft, taxi-ways and the immediate surrounds of SAA Technical, line stations (within the borders of RSA), and Technical areas to identify pest hazards i.e. feral cats, pigeons & other pest-birds that could contribute to jeopardizing safe aircraft operations.
- Participate in the pest control cost effective and eco-safe programme for SAAT and its contracted third party customers with limited or no business interruptions, compliance to all standard safety, health & environmental policies and procedures, that workmanship of high quality is maintained at all times.
- Assist SAA and third party customers to implement an eco-safe pest control programme for their aircraft to market their onboard product successfully.
- Investigate customer complaints / queries as they arise in relation to positive pest identification, root causes, evaluation and initiate controls to eliminate the problem and avoid re-infestation.
- Maintain spray equipment and poison store supply.
- Keep spray equipment clean and serviceable.
- Keep poison store neat and tidy.
- Mix poisons in line with health and safety procedures, manufacturer\'s directions and Pest Control Operators (P.C.O.) regulations.
- Complete documentation and certification reports.
- Keep accurate records of materials, pesticides, poisons and sprays used.
- Complete documentation on completion of works (e.g. fumigation certificates, service reports etc.).
- Promote education and awareness of employees on pest control health hazards including controls to mitigate risks / impacts.
- Liaise with manufacturers / suppliers on matters arising i.e. research, developments, new products, in the pest control and related industry.
Qualifications & Experience
- Matric – Grade 12.
- Pest control operations course (must be relevant and prescribed).
- Driver\'s license Code B.
- Registered as a P.C.O. in terms of Act 36 of (National Department : Agriculture) (Structural Pest Control).
- Experience: 4 years\' experience as professional pest controller (post training).
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Identification of health risks (with reference to legal requirements) which need to be assessed by means of inspections, examination to determine sample areas and recommendation of appropriate corrective action to minimize / eliminate risk exposure.
- Knowledge & Skills: Good understanding and knowledge of the Pest Control Industry and service orientated. Pest biology (pest behaviour, habits, biology, special features and species).
- Attributes: Attention to detail. Strong interpersonal skills. High computer literacy in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Problem solving and technical / analytical thinking. Excellent organisational and time management skills. Determined with a creative approach to problem solving.
