Qualifications

About the Role

Our client, a prominent mining operation in Benoni, Gauteng, requires an experienced Occupational Hygienist to ensure the health and safety of its workforce by identifying, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards. This critical role involves developing and implementing comprehensive occupational hygiene programs in line with legislative requirements and industry best practices. The successful candidate will conduct workplace assessments, monitor exposure levels to chemical, physical, and biological agents, and provide recommendations for hazard mitigation. You will be instrumental in fostering a proactive safety culture and protecting the well-being of employees within the demanding mining environment of Gauteng.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and manage an occupational hygiene program for the mining site.


• Conduct workplace exposure assessments for chemical hazards (dusts, fumes, gases) and physical agents (noise, vibration, radiation).


• Operate and maintain a range of occupational hygiene monitoring equipment.


• Interpret monitoring data and scientific literature to assess risks and determine appropriate control measures.


• Prepare detailed reports on findings, recommendations, and follow-up actions for management and relevant stakeholders.


• Develop and deliver occupational hygiene training programs to employees and management.


• Ensure compliance with all relevant South African legislation, including the Mine Health and Safety Act.


• Investigate workplace health complaints and incidents related to occupational exposures.


• Collaborate with safety officers, engineers, and medical personnel to address health and safety issues.


• Maintain accurate records of monitoring results, risk assessments, and control measures implemented in Benoni.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree or relevant diploma in Occupational Hygiene, Environmental Health, or a related science field.


• Minimum of 5 years of experience as an Occupational Hygienist, preferably within the mining sector.


• Proven knowledge of occupational hygiene principles, risk assessment methodologies, and control strategies.


• Proficiency in operating and calibrating various monitoring instruments.


• Strong understanding of South African occupational health and safety legislation.


• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and reporting skills.


• Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all organizational levels.


• Registered or eligible for registration with a relevant professional body (e.g., SAIOH).


• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, often in challenging site conditions.
