Qualifications

  • MSc in Radiation Physics or Medical Physics is required.
  • nGAP minimum requires 70% for Masters and potential/commitment to PhD.
  • Evidence of tertiary teaching experience or strong potential for university teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Radiation Physics to Radiography students and Physics to Nursing students.
  • Contribute to development and delivery of Medical Physics Honours modules.
  • Lead curriculum development aligned with accreditation standards (HPCSA).
  • Support interdisciplinary collaboration with Health Sciences, Engineering and NMU Medical School.
  • Engage in academic administration and pursue governance and leadership within the department.

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

Nelson Mandela University (NMU) invites applications for an nGAP Lecturer in Physics with specialisation in Radiation Physics and Medical Physics. This position forms part of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP), Phase 11. The post is strategically aligned with national scarce skills priorities and will support the development and implementation of a new Honours programme in Medical Physics, planned for launch in 2028.

Core Purpose
  • Perform academic duties while progressively developing the capacity to lead, coordinate, and manage programmes in Radiation and Medical Physics.
  • Provide intellectual and strategic leadership in the design, development, and implementation of a professionally aligned Medical Physics Honours programme that meets national accreditation and industry standards.
  • Contribute meaningfully to teaching, research, postgraduate supervision, and curriculum transformation within a strategically expanding Department of Physics, with a view to long-term programme sustainability and growth.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
  • Teach Radiation Physics to Radiography students and foundational Physics to Nursing students, developing academic and pedagogical expertise.
  • Contribute to the development and presentation of modules in the Medical Physics Honours programme, with mentorship toward future coordination and leadership.
  • Participate in curriculum development aligned with HPCSA pathways and accreditation standards, building capacity for programme leadership.
  • Support interdisciplinary collaboration with Health Sciences, Engineering, CHRTEM, and the NMU Medical School.
  • Engage in academic administration and transformation initiatives, progressively developing governance and leadership capacity within the Department.
CORE COMPETENCIES
  • Strong knowledge of radiation physics, medical imaging, radiation protection, and applied physics principles relevant to healthcare and clinical settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a passion for students, and the ability to facilitate learning using modern teaching methods and technology.
  • Competence in data analysis, simulation, and relevant computational tools for research and teaching.
  • Evidence of successful experimental or applied research in Medical or Radiation Physics.
Requirements
  • An MSc in either Radiation Physics or Medical Physics.
  • nGap minimum requirement is a 70% for Masters, as well as strong potential and commitment to enroll for a PhD, or already in possession of a PhD, in one of these fields.
  • Demonstrated expertise/experience in a Radiation Physics/Medical physics.
  • Evidence of tertiary teaching experience or strong potential for university teaching.
  • Research record or clear potential to develop a sustainable research profile.
