Job summary

Department of Health in South Africa seeks a Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology to lead 24-hour ophthalmology services and meet Batho Pele targets at Tambo Memorial Hospital. You will train interns, medical officers, and optometrists while maintaining high-quality records.

Applicants must hold MBChB with FC Ophth(SA) and MMED and be registered with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist. Grade 3 experience (10+ years) is preferred for leadership.

Qualifications

• Registration with HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology (current).
• MBChB or equivalent, FC Ophth(SA) and MMED.
• Grade 1: No experience after registration; Grade 2: minimum of 5 years; Grade 3: minimum of 10 years after registration.

Responsibilities

• Provide 24-hour ophthalmology services in line with Batho Pele Principles and meet cataract surgery targets at the hospital.
• Assist with training and guidance of Medical Interns, Medical Officers, optometrists, and other staff categories.
• Maintain accurate health records and promote CME; develop departmental skills and lead in research/instruction.
• Perform administrative roles including leave planning, staff allocation, PMDS and contracting, RWOPS management, stock control, and PFMA compliance.

Requirements

• An appropriate qualifications that allows registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist; MBChB degree or equivalent, FC Ophth(SA) and MMED. Current registration and registration certificate with the HPCSA as an independent medical specialist in Ophthalmology. Grade 1: No experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist. Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years' appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA. Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years' appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA. Inherent requirements of the job: Participate in the after-hours call system (commuted overtime is compulsory). Good leadership skills, excellent communication skills (verbal and written), and good interpersonal skills. Work independently and under pressure. Work well within the Ophthalmology department and the hospital as a team leader. Incumbents must demonstrate understanding of policies and procedures that govern the public service. Draft operational plans and Standard Operating Procedures in line with the legislative framework. Demonstrate computer literacy in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), with the ability to compile presentations and draft professional reports.

• Provide high-quality, cost-effective, and efficient 24-hour ophthalmology services in line with the Batho Pele Principles and ensure that performance targets for cataract surgeries at Tambo Memorial Hospital are met in accordance with the treatment time guarantee system. Assist with the training and guidance of Medical Interns, Medical Officers, optometrists, and other staff categories. Maintain accurate and appropriate health records in accordance with the above. Develop skills in the department regarding research and instruction, and promote CME (Continuous Medical Education) through tutorials, M&M, etc. Perform administrative roles, including but not limited to leave planning, staff allocation, PMDS and contracting, RWOPS management, and stock control and management, in line with SCM prescripts and PFMA.
