Job summary

Requirements
  • Grade 12 plus an appropriate qualification that allows registration as an independent Medical Practitioner.
  • No experience required after registration as a Medical Registrar.
  • Must have completed Post Community Service.
  • Registration with HPCSA for the financial year 2025/26.
  • Registrars will be rotated between institutions.
  • Work experience in the field of General Surgery, CMSA Part 1 examinations, auxiliary courses relevant to General Surgery are added advantages.
Duties
  • Provide patient care in the department of General Surgery.
  • Supervise all rotating pre‑graduate students, interns and junior colleagues in clinical practice.
  • Actively participate in research (original basic or clinical research) and counsel during surgery emergencies.
  • Ensure correct surgical treatment of patients.
  • Participate in the academic programme which includes patient case presentations, subject discussions and attendance of postgraduate programmes.
  • Pass primary and intermediate exams of the University of Pretoria or College of Surgeons, final exit exams of the College, and a research dissertation for the University of Pretoria Mmed (Chir).
Note

These positions will be joint appointments between the Gauteng Department of Health and the following academic institutions: University of Witwatersrand / University of Pretoria and/or Sefako Makgatho University.
