Job summary

Bilnor Staffing Solutions is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to coordinate and integrate engineering disciplines across the project lifecycle in Centurion, South Africa. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and at least 5 years of experience in the mining and construction sectors. Job description

You are responsible for coordinating and integrating all engineering disciplines across the project lifecycle to ensure alignment with client specifications, internal standards, and overall project objectives. You will work closely with process, mechanical/design, electrical, control & instrumentation and civil engineering teams to ensure that all technical aspects are consistently applied, reviewed, and executed in accordance with approved requirements.

You will act as a key interface between engineering, procurement, and fabrication, ensuring that designs are complete, accurate, and issued in a manner that supports efficient procurement and manufacturing processes. This includes the preparation and management of engineering data packs and Bills of Quantities (BOQs) to facilitate timely purchasing and production activities. You are accountable for maintaining engineering quality, compliance, and integrity throughout the project. This involves proactively managing technical queries, design changes, and engineering risks.

Strong communication and problem‑solving skills are essential, as you serve as the central point of contact for all technical matters, ensuring that stakeholders remain informed, aligned, and positioned to deliver a successful project outcome.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Coordinate engineering disciplines across projects

  • Monitor project progress and provide engineering input
  • Conduct site visits and inspections

MECHANICAL PROJECT ENGINEER JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Preparation and management of project engineering budgets
  • Monitoring of engineering costs against approved project budgets
  • Identification and reporting of potential cost overruns and budget risks
  • Contribution to project profitability through effective engineering and procurement planning
BUDGET AND FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The Project Engineer is responsible for supporting the financial performance of assigned projects through effective planning, monitoring, and control of engineering‑related costs.

  • Monitor engineering, procurement, fabrication, and construction costs against approved budgets
  • Identify budget deviations and communicate potential financial risks to project management
  • Review and verify Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and material requirements to ensure cost accuracy
  • Support procurement activities by evaluating technical compliance and cost effectiveness
  • Participate in project forecasting and cash flow planning activities
  • Contribute to value engineering initiatives aimed at reducing project costs while maintaining quality and safety standards
  • Ensure engineering decisions support the commercial objectives of the project
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating project cost trackers and reporting budget status during project review meetings
PROJECT PHASE INVOLVEMENT
Concept and Proposal Phase
  • Support development of technical concepts and solutions
  • Assist with preliminary layouts, costing, and feasibility assessments
  • Provide technical input into proposals and tender submissions
Engineering and Design Phase
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities
  • Review and approve engineering deliverables
  • Manage design reviews and technical risk assessments
  • Ensure client design criteria and project standards are incorporated into all engineering deliverables
Procurement Phase
  • Develop and review technical procurement packages
  • Support supplier evaluations and technical clarifications
  • Monitor procurement progress against project schedules
Fabrication and Assembly Phase
  • Provide engineering support to manufacturing activities
  • Resolve technical queries and non‑conformances
  • Ensure fabrication complies with approved designs and specifications
Construction and Commissioning Phase
  • Support site installation activities
  • Coordinate technical issue resolution
  • Participate in commissioning, testing, and handover activities
Project Close‑Out Phase
  • Ensure completion of final engineering documentation
  • Assist with lessons learned and project close‑out reporting
  • Support final handover to the client
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in mining, bulk material handling, or industrial project environment
  • Experience in mining, bulk materials handling and conveyor systems (preferred)
  • Fabrication experience
  • Experience working on construction or industrial projects
  • Exposure to site work and project execution
  • Use of AI to increase efficiency
  • Valid Passport
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Willingness to travel
  • Medically fit for construction and mining environments
  • Ability to work extended hours when required
