Job summary

Kirby Group Engineering, a leading international engineering services contractor, is seeking a Commissioning Lead in Cape Town. You will define the commissioning strategy, coordinate cross-functional teams, and ensure delivery on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.

You will manage FAT, SAT, TAB, and handover processes, mentor engineers and subcontractors, and maintain rigorous documentation while liaising with clients and stakeholders to secure project success.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive commissioning strategy across the project or region.
• Develop and implement commissioning plans aligned with project programme.
• Lead commissioning kick-off meetings and establish project direction.
• Oversee all commissioning activities to ensure safety, on time, and in compliance with specifications and quality standards.
• Manage FAT, SAT, TAB and system turnover processes.
• Ensure compliance with project procedures, specifications and quality standards.
• Lead and manage commissioning engineers and subcontractors; allocate resources.
• Coordinate with design teams, vendors and project stakeholders.
• Maintain commissioning documentation, reports and trackers.
• Identify, assess and mitigate commissioning risks; report to senior management.

Planning & Strategy

The commissioning lead is responsible for defining and driving the commissioning strategy across the project or region, ensuring full alignment with programme milestones and delivery objectives.

• Develop and implement commissioning plans aligned with project programme
• Define system boundaries, test pack strategy and handover sequence
• Lead commissioning kick-off meetings and establish project direction

Execution & Delivery

The commissioning lead oversees all commissioning activities to ensure that systems are delivered safely, on time, and in compliance with specifications and standards.

• Oversee execution of all commissioning activities across systems
• Manage FAT, SAT, TAB and system turnover processes
• Ensure compliance with project procedures, specifications and quality standards

Leadership & Team Management

The commissioning lead manages and develops the commissioning team, ensuring effective allocation of resources and consistent performance across projects.

• Lead and manage commissioning engineers and subcontractors
• Assign responsibilities and monitor delivery performance
• Mentor and develop team members through guidance and review

Technical Authority & Coordination

The commissioning lead acts as the central technical authority for commissioning and ensures coordination between all disciplines and stakeholders.

• Act as escalation point for complex commissioning and technical issues
• Coordinate with design teams, vendors and project stakeholders
• Ensure systems are commissioned in line with design intent

Documentation & Systems Control

The commissioning lead ensures full control and governance of commissioning documentation and tracking systems to support project delivery and handover.

• Ensure preparation and completion of commissioning documentation and reports
• Manage test packs, procedures, and commissioning records
• Maintain commissioning trackers and progress reporting systems

Risk & Quality Management

The commissioning lead is responsible for identifying risks and ensuring quality compliance throughout all commissioning phases.

• Identify, assess and mitigate commissioning risks
• Ensure compliance with quality plans and industry standards
• Report risks and key issues to senior management

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

The commissioning lead represents the commissioning function to the client and ensures strong stakeholder communication throughout the project.

• Act as main interface for client commissioning activities
• Lead commissioning meetings and reviews with stakeholders
• Ensure client confidence in system performance and delivery

Continuous Improvement

The commissioning lead drives improvements and standardisation across commissioning processes and methodologies.

• Promote standardisation of commissioning processes and templates
• Lead lessons learned and knowledge sharing initiatives
• Support adoption of innovative commissioning practices
