Overview
County Fair, a division of Astral Operations Limited, has an opportunity for a seasoned Maintenance Manager based at the Abattoir in Klipheuwel in the Western Cape. The overall purpose of the Maintenance Manager role is to coordinate, coach and control the activities of maintenance teams in the production and process environment and to provide specialist technical advice to ensure maximum equipment availability. This includes managing all aspects of the maintenance department (mechanical and electrical) including the Engineering Store. The incumbent must understand the Occupational Health and Safety Act and be willing to accept general machinery regulations 2.7 legal appointment.
Responsibilities
Administration
- Co-ordinate maintenance activities
- Execute the maintenance plan
- Manage maintenance department costs
- Ensure engineering spares availability
- Control all overtime worked in the maintenance department
- Co-ordinate annual leave rosters and manage leave for the department, with support from the Maintenance Planner, Foremen and Supervisors
- Coordinate skills training for the maintenance team
- Compile daily utilities, electricity and water usage report
- Be the 20 Keys management system Facilitator
Maintenance
- Attend daily morning meeting with shift foremen
- Coordinate planned & preventative maintenance by setting defined objectives, delegating authority and responsibility and maintaining effective communication channels
- Control maintenance by measuring performance relative to the objectives above, evaluating deviations and directing subordinates toward improvement
- Drive daily plant start-up
- Conduct weekly inspections of the workshop ensuring that a high standard of housekeeping and safety are being maintained
- Coordinate works order and job cards to close back log
- Utilize reliability centred maintenance (RCM) principles to improve maintenance system
- Manage the execution of maintenance activities
- Conduct systematic problem solving using available PDCA and RCA tools
- Conduct and Manage job observations & tool box talks
- Conduct machine audits
- Conduct machine SHE risk assessment and compile report
- Conduct control environment safety integrity
- Understanding of electrical power generation, supply and distribution
- Understanding of photovoltaic systems
- Participate in team problem solving and maintenance programme development
- Participate in quality incident investigations
- Record all machine engineering change management
- Locate plant, equipment, spares, and relevant documentation/ systems
- Monitor and control projects in progress in the different departments
Operational / Functional
- Drive OEE improvements plans
- Analyze uptime element and make improvements
- Participate in all systems Audits
- Compile Capex justifications for plant improvement
- Maintain health and integrity of fixed asset registers
- Direct and advise the Maintenance Planner and all staff in the department
- Co-ordinate production by setting defined objectives, delegating authority and responsibility and maintaining effective communication channels
- Control production by measuring performance relative to the objectives above, evaluating deviations and directing subordinates toward improvement
- Identify competency gaps
- Ensure team members undergo formal diagnostic assessments against their competency standard according to the internal certification guidelines using multiple sources of evidence
- Conduct daily inspections of the factory ensuring that a high standard of housekeeping and safety are being maintained
- Develop and agree individual training plans with team members to address the competency gaps
- Ensure training is conducted according to the training plan
- Conduct machine risk assessment
- Conduct machine asset integrity assessment
Quality
- Ensure commitment and conformance to requirements of quality and risk management systems and 20 Keys and any other company management systems requirements
- Maintain the standards of the water quality management SANS 241 drinking water
- Maintain the standards of the environmental management systems ISO 14001:2015
- Maintain the standards of the occupational health and safety management system SANS /ISO45001
Qualifications and Experience
- Must have completed Mechanical or Electrical qualification (N6/National Diploma/BTech/Bsc Engineering)
- Must be a qualified Artisan in the Engineering trade; preferably mechanical
- At least 5 years relevant experience at managerial / supervisory level
- At least 5 years relevant poultry / abattoir experience
- Must be computer literate, and have experience with MS Office
- Have knowledge in planned & preventative maintenance program
- Keep updated with trends and new developments of HACCP, 20 keys and maintenance programmes
- Ability to solve problems related to HACCP and 20 keys
- Highly aware of safety, health and hygiene stipulations and very cautious to reduce errors

- Ability to work under pressure and swift attendance of any maintenance issues
- Must be able to work independently and cope well under pressure
- Must understand and have able to balance situational and systemic maintenance work

- It is essential that the successful candidate be self-motivated with the ability to meet strict deadlines
