Placements24 is seeking an experienced Legal Advisor for a remote role in South Africa, focusing on banking and finance law. The successful candidate will provide expert legal counsel on financial transactions, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance, while liaising with regulators and external counsel from Centurion, Gauteng or remotely across ZA.

Required are an admitted SA attorney status and an LLB, with 5–7 years of post-qualification banking & finance experience.

• Experience in big law firm or in-house legal department preferred.
• Strong knowledge of SA financial services regulations.

About the Role

Our client, a leading financial institution with a significant presence in Southern Africa, is seeking an experienced and astute Legal Advisor to join their esteemed legal department. This role is primarily focused on providing expert legal counsel within the dynamic Banking & Finance sector and will be based remotely, offering flexibility to candidates within South Africa. The successful individual will be responsible for advising on a wide array of financial transactions, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance matters. Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive legal advice on banking products, services, and transactions, including loans, debt financing, and capital markets.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable banking regulations, including those from the South African Reserve Bank and other relevant authorities.
• Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of financial agreements, such as loan agreements, security documents, and intercreditor agreements.
• Advise on corporate governance matters relevant to the financial services industry.
• Manage legal risk associated with new product development and existing operations.
• Liaise with external counsel and regulatory bodies as required.
• Conduct legal research on specific issues related to banking and finance law.
• Assist in the development and implementation of legal policies and procedures.
• Support the business units in achieving their objectives within a compliant legal framework.

Requirements

• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa or equivalent legal qualification.
• An LLB degree or higher.
• A minimum of 5-7 years of post-qualification experience, with a strong focus on banking and finance law.
• Experience in a major law firm or in-house legal department of a financial institution is highly preferred.
• Deep understanding of South African financial services regulations, including the Companies Act, Banks Act, and National Credit Act.
• Proven experience in drafting and negotiating complex financial documentation.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly.
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities effectively, and meet tight deadlines.
• Proficiency in legal research tools and standard office software.
