A leading South African educational institution in Johannesburg is seeking an experienced lecturer to teach jazz performance and theory at the undergraduate level. The ideal candidate will hold a Master's degree or PhD and possess university teaching experience, along with a strong background in research or the music industry. The role includes supervising postgraduate students and contributing to departmental administration.
The incumbent’s primary area of creative work, research teaching experience and qualifications should be in the areas of jazz performance, theory and composition, specialising in jazz piano performance. The applicant should also demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of South African and pan-African jazz. It is recommended that the applicant’s creative work and research engages other musical genres, media, and arts disciplines in order to complement the existing profile of our jazz and composition staff who work in more experimental modes. Working experience in an area of music technology and production would be an advantage.
The core duties will be to teach undergraduate solo and ensemble jazz performance in learning environments including individual tuition, group practical classes and ensemble classes; teach jazz theory and improvisation at all levels of the undergraduate degree but especially first and second year; develop and teach courses in jazz; and supervise post-graduate jazz studies students. The incumbent will be expected to take on administrative roles within the Music Department and the School, including to coordinate undergraduate jazz performance courses.
A Master’s degree with registration towards a PhD for Lecturer level, with university teaching experience and evidence of research ability or music industry experience. A PhD is required at Senior Lecturer level, with university teaching and supervision experience, as well as a research profile and/or music industry experience.
