Job summary

A major real estate company in Cape Town is seeking an experienced legal professional to draft and negotiate lease agreements. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7 years of experience in negotiating complex retail and office lease documents. Strong negotiation and communication skills are required to effectively support the leasing team. This is a fully on-site role with competitive compensation and an annual bonus.

Responsibilities
  • Draft and negotiate leases, letters of intent, subleases, amendments, assignments, temporary license agreements, and other related leasing documents.
  • Assist the leasing teams in tenant lease negotiations.
  • Identify and discuss legal and business issues and assist the teams in resolving such issues in the best interest of the Company.
  • Provide advice to the business to avoid legal disputes, including landlord/tenant legal issues, tenant leases, tenant defaults and other miscellaneous legal matters.
  • Participate in the development and interpretation of company operating policies and procedures.
  • Provide guidance and advice on legal aspects of leasing and other general real estate matters.
  • Provide guidance to paralegals and coordinators to process lease documentation through execution.
  • Provide general legal advice related to leasing matters that may arise from time to time.
Qualifications
  • Member of the California Bar in good standing.
  • Strong academic credentials preferred.
  • "Big law firm" and in-house experience preferred.
  • Experience with REITs and/or retail real estate companies preferred.
  • 7+ years prior experience negotiating and drafting complex retail, office and/or mixed-use lease documents, preferably in regional or flagship mixed-use retail development settings.
  • Excellent reading, oral/written communication skills, strong analytical capability, negotiation skills and concise grammatical skills, detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Strong work ethic with a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Strong initiative and ability to manage multiple projects as well as strong follow-through skills.
  • Ability to work well with others in a fast paced, team-oriented and dynamic environment.
  • Ability to complete projects timely and accurately and to interact and communicate diplomatically with others.
Compensation

Exempt - Fully on-site role based out of our Century City corporate office. Will only consider local candidates / no relocation package attached to the role$ , – $ ,/ year + Discretionary Annual Bonus
