Job description
Learning & Development Manager – Barrick Africa & Middle East (AME)

Barrick’s Africa & Middle East (AME) team is seeking a dynamic and highly capable Learning & Development (L&D) Manager to lead the regional training function across multiple mining operations.

Position Overview

This pivotal role will drive a step‑change in how we build capability, strengthen safety performance, and grow our local workforce. The successful candidate will be a hands‑on, high‑potential leader—experienced in managing training in a large mining environment yet energetic and adaptable enough to work closely with teams on the ground.

Reporting to the AME HR leadership team, the incumbent will partner with both regional and site‑based HR and operational leaders to deliver a world‑class, standardised, and results‑driven L&D function.

Key Responsibilities
Learning Strategy and Structure

Develop and implement a comprehensive AME Learning & Development strategy aligned with Barrick’s global goals and the regional people plan.

Establish standardised training departments and structures across all operations, integrating site‑level training resources under a cohesive regional framework.

Take full ownership of the L&D function, ensuring alignment to operational and strategic priorities.

Induction and Onboarding

Overhaul and standardise induction programs across all sites to ensure consistent, engaging, and safety‑focused onboarding for all employees and contractors.

Collaborate with operations and safety teams to ensure content relevance and impact.

Learning Systems Implementation

Lead the regional rollout of Damstra as the Learning Management System (LMS) for AME.

Ensure all training data, certifications, and competency records are accurately maintained and reported.

Safety and Competency Development

Strengthen the quality and effectiveness of safety training, emphasizing competency assessment and on‑the‑job application rather than classroom‑only learning.

Collaborate with safety leadership to embed lessons from real‑world incidents into training materials and promote a Zero Harm culture.

Ensure compliance with all relevant safety, health, and regulatory requirements.

People Development and Leadership Training

Partner with the Barrick Academy and external providers to design and implement impactful leadership development and soft skills programs, with a strong focus on developing local talent.

Implement targeted programs for supervisors and future leaders to strengthen performance, accountability, and engagement across AME operations.

Trainer Capability and Performance

Baseline and evaluate all training staff across AME operations.

Identify gaps and implement development plans to ensure we have top‑quality trainers delivering high‑impact learning.

Succession, Localisation, and Skills Transfer

Drive the localisation strategy by tracking and facilitating effective expatriate‑to‑local skills transfer.

Lead the development of competency‑based career progression pathways for all local roles, including defining role profiles and required competencies.

Partner with HR to align training programs with succession and workforce localisation targets.

Governance, Reporting, and Continuous Improvement

Manage regional training budgets, ensuring efficiency and accountability.

Track, analyse, and report on learning effectiveness, safety training metrics, and workforce development outcomes.

Qualification Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Management, HR or a related field and ideally tertiary qualification in Learning and Development.
