Placements24, on behalf of its mining client in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, seeks a Lead Environmental Scientist to design and oversee mine rehabilitation and closure strategies. You will lead environmental assessments, manage monitoring programs, and ensure regulatory compliance while coordinating with operations, regulators, and communities.

The ideal candidate has advanced degrees in environmental science or related fields, 10+ years in mine rehabilitation, and strong GIS/modelling skills.

Formación

• Master's degree or PhD in Environmental Science, Ecology, Environmental Engineering, or related field.
• Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in environmental management with mine rehabilitation and closure.
• Experience developing and executing rehabilitation projects in mining environments.
• Strong knowledge of South African environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks.
• Experience with GIS and other environmental modelling software.
• Proven ability to manage projects, budgets, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.

Responsabilidades

• Develop and implement mine rehabilitation and closure plans according to regulations and best practices.
• Oversee environmental monitoring programs including water quality, soil health, biodiversity, and air quality.
• Conduct EIAs and manage follow-up programs.
• Engage regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and local communities.
• Provide expert advice on compliance, risk management, and mitigation.
• Supervise a team of environmental professionals and contractors.
• Develop and manage budgets for rehabilitation projects.
• Conduct site inspections and audits to ensure rehabilitation effectiveness.
• Stay current with environmental legislation and innovative techniques.
• Prepare technical reports and management plans for regulatory bodies.
