Job description

Interwaste, a leader in waste management solutions across Southern Africa, is seeking a seasoned Lab Technician to join our team at Germiston Hub: Laboratory.

Role Overview

The Laboratory Technician is primarily responsible for safe handling, testing, analysis of waste samples to ensure they are aligned with the correct waste type specific for Landfill disposal and Effluent Treatment Plant.

Key Responsibilities
Sample Receipt
  • Receive and log test samples
  • Handle and prepare test samples in accordance with documented instructions
Conduct Tests
  • Perform analysis according to procedures and test methods in order to produce reliable and precise data to assist with waste classification
  • Capture analytical results on lims
  • Maintaining and operating standard laboratory equipment: gcms; bomb calorimeter; xrf; ph meters; scales; moisture analyser; ec meters
  • Perform instrument troubleshooting when required
  • Following and ensuring safety procedures and safety checks
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment as necessary
  • Maintain and manage a clean and well-arranged work environment
  • Keeping laboratory supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, verifying receipt
  • Record information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books
  • Handle analytical reports and queries
  • Validate test method as per ISO17025:2017 and TR26 document
  • Ensure quality and validity of results as per documented procedures
  • Performs document quality check in accordance with company laboratory practice
  • Performs file backup to ensure proper storage and archiving of electronic registers
Maintain the Management System
  • Comply with documented management system policies and procedures
  • Identify opportunities to improve the management system of the laboratory
  • Identify non-conformances and/or deviations from the management system and from procedures for the performance of laboratory activities
  • Assist in the investigation of identified non-conformances, establish the root cause and implement required corrective actions
  • Ensure good housekeeping in all test areas

Minimum Requirements
  • National Diploma in a relevant field, such as Analytical chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Environmental science
  • 3-5 years’ experience working in a laboratory environment
  • Experience in waste management (Advantageous)
  • ISO/IEC 17025 system course certificate [Advantageous]
