Job summary

Old Mutual South Africa is seeking a Junior Data Engineer to join the Mass Foundation Cluster in Cape Town. You will design, build, and maintain data infrastructure and pipelines that move data from source systems to warehouses, enabling reliable business insights.

You will work with SQL and Python to implement data models, ensure data quality and security, and collaborate with analysts and stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
• 1–2 years’ experience in data engineering, database development, software development, or a related technical discipline.
• Proficiency in SQL and Python is required, with exposure to data integration, ETL processes, and cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
• Knowledge of database design, data warehousing, data pipelines, and data governance principles is preferred.
• Experience within financial services, collections, payments, customer operations, contact centre environments or other data-intensive environments will be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Oversee data architecture and quality across datasets in collaboration with stakeholders.
• Contribute to database specifications to ensure standards and data integrity.
• Gather business requirements through interviews, workshops, and analysis to define target user goals.
• Install and test complex databases and related products to meet customer needs.
• Design and select storage, data center, network and client/server environments following best practices.
