About the Role

We're seeking an experienced Electrical Power Systems Engineer to join our telecommunications infrastructure team. This role is responsible for the review, implementation, and advisory of electrical power systems — with a focus on colocation sites and future technology deployments or upgrades for our customers.

You'll ensure full compliance with SANS, apply risk-based engineering principles, and deliver reliable, safe, and cost-effective power upgrades to support network expansion and multi-operator sharing.

You will be accountable for the review, approval, and design of power solutions that enable our customers' network growth and sustainability.

Key Accountabilities
  • Power Applications & Review
    • Review, validate, and provide consent for all co-location power application requests at Vodacom/Mast sites.
    • Evaluate requests for technical and contractual feasibility, considering load capacity, redundancy, and commercial contracts.
    • Conduct site condition analyses to identify risks or constraints impacting co-location or expansion.
    • Provide well-documented approvals with clear technical rationales, ensuring timely communication with key stakeholders.
  • Risk-Based Engineering & Compliance Audit
    • Apply risk-based engineering principles to all new power installations and upgrade projects.
    • Identify, assess, and mitigate risks before implementation.
    • Ensure all power system activities comply with SANS, safety standards, and operational requirements.

We’re seeking a highly skilled Power Systems Application Engineer with strong expertise in Energy Management Systems (EMS) and Generation Control applications. This role involves hands-on technical ownership of real-time systems that ensure reliable, efficient, and secure power generation and transmission operations.

You’ll work on industry-leading platforms such as GE PowerOn Reliance (XA21), AEMS/GDC, or equivalent systems from Siemens, OSI, ABB, Schneider, and collaborate with global engineering teams to support, maintain, and optimize EMS functionality.

  • Key Responsibilities
  • Administer, configure, and optimize Energy Management Systems (EMS) applications and databases.
  • Perform corrective and preventive maintenance to restore or enhance system performance.
  • Conduct code reviews, deployments, testing, and monitoring of fixes and patches in live customer environments.
  • Manage application configuration, tuning, and security patching of EMS systems.
  • Work with real-time power system applications such as AGC, Load Forecasting, Economic Dispatch, Power Flow, and State Estimation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues involving communication protocols, system logs, and application behavior.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to deliver high-reliability system solutions and support operational excellence.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in Power System Applications (Generation).
  • Experience with GE PowerOn Reliance (XA21) and/or AEMS/GDC Platform Software; experience with Siemens, OSI, ABB, Schneider.
  • Proficient in Linux and Windows.
  • Strong understanding of communication protocols: IEC 60870-5-101/104, DNP3, Modbus, ICCP, OPC.
  • Oracle and SQL Server experience.
  • Programming proficiency in C, C++, PERL, or similar languages.
  • SQL and shell scripting skills; able to read logs and debug issues.
  • Experience applying fixes and patches on live customer systems.

Ideal Background

  • Electrical Engineering or Computer Science degree (or equivalent).
  • Prior work in Electrical Transmission Modeling or EMS Application Engineering.
  • Familiarity with GE eTerra, SCADA/EMS environments, or real-time control systems.
