Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an experienced Irrigation Systems Specialist to join a leading agricultural service provider in Upington, Northern Cape. You will design, install and optimize irrigation systems for crops in a water-scarce region.

The role requires hydraulics and water management expertise, strong problem-solving, and the ability to train staff. You will collaborate with farmers, oversee installations, troubleshoot equipment, and promote efficient water use.

Qualifications

• A Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Horticulture, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of experience in designing, installing, and maintaining agricultural irrigation systems.
• In-depth knowledge of irrigation components, hydraulics, pumps, and control systems.
• Proficiency in irrigation design software and CAD is advantageous.
• Understanding of agronomic principles and crop water requirements.
• Experience with water management and conservation techniques is essential.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and diagnostic skills.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• A valid driver's license and willingness to travel to farm sites within the Northern Cape region.

Responsibilities

• Design and engineer irrigation systems (drip, sprinkler, and pivot) tailored to farm layouts and crop requirements.
• Oversee the installation and commissioning of new irrigation infrastructure.
• Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of existing irrigation systems to ensure optimal performance.
• Troubleshoot and repair irrigation system malfunctions, including pumps, valves, filters, and controllers.
• Advise farmers on best practices for water management, irrigation scheduling, and water conservation techniques.
• Analyze soil moisture data and weather forecasts to optimize irrigation timing and water application rates.
• Manage inventory of irrigation components and materials.
• Ensure compliance with water usage regulations and promote water-efficient farming practices in Upington, Northern Cape.
• Provide technical training and support to farm staff on the operation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
• Keep abreast of new technologies and innovations in irrigation and water management.
