Job summary

A leading energy solutions provider in South Africa is seeking a qualified professional to lead and deliver safe and compliant commissioning of power generation systems. Qualifications

Key outputs
Technical delivery and commissioning duties
  • Lead and safe delivery of installation, pre-commissioning and commissioning activities for power generation systems to achieve client acceptance and handover.
  • Produce and approve commissioning procedures, test packs, witnessed test certificates, and final close‑out documentation.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical faults during early‑life operation and coordinate supplier/engineering interventions to restore availability.
Planning, resources and commercial control
  • Develop and maintain detailed commissioning schedules, outage and permit plans, resource rosters and material/spares forecasts to meet project milestones.
  • Prioritise and allocate commissioning tasks to maximise crew productivity and project profitability while controlling consumables within delegated budgets.
  • Manage minor variations, raise RFIs and coordinate contractor/vendor scope and attendance for FAT/SAT and site works.
Governance, stakeholders and continuous improvement
  • Ensure compliance with HSE, QA/QC, permit‑to‑work and regulatory requirements and sign off safety and quality records.
  • Present status, technical issues and acceptance results to clients, principals, regional operations and senior management and elevate risks that exceed authority limits.
  • Capture field failures and reliability data, compile root‑cause product issue reports, and coordinate corrective actions with suppliers and engineering to drive continuous product improvement and support NPI.
Technical commissioning and handover
  • Lead and deliver safe, compliant commissioning of power generation and related systems, producing completed commissioning records, witnessed test certificates, and client acceptance packs.
Planning, scheduling and resource control
  • Produce and maintain detailed commissioning schedules, switch/permit plans, resourcing rosters, and outage windows; align milestones with project timelines and client constraints.
Team leadership and supervision
  • Supervise the commissioning team (commissioning engineers, coordinators, technicians), select and develop site personnel, run daily briefings and toolbox talks, and ensure competent delivery on site.
Quality, safety and compliance
  • Ensure all commissioning activities follow company procedures, HSE protocols, QA/QC requirements and permit-to-work rules; create and sign off safety and quality documentation.
Technical support and troubleshooting

Provide expert on‑site and remote technical support for installation issues, debugging, reliability investigations, and early‑life failures; escalated complex defects to engineering and suppliers.

Continuous service improvement and supplier liaison
  • Capture recurring field defects and performance data; compile root‑cause product issue reports; coordinate corrective actions with suppliers and engineering to drive product improvements.
  • New product introduction (NPI) supporr
  • Validate new equipment in the field, feed commissioning lessons into design reviews, confirm readiness of spares and documentation, and support controlled rollouts across regions.
Warranty, reliability and durability outputs
  • Investigate warranty/CPI cases, document findings, recommend remedial actions, and provide formal reports to commercial and service teams for claims and reliability improvements.
Planning and prioritisation for productivity and profitability
  • Prioritise commissioning and support jobs to maximise crew utilisation and reduce downtime; control consumable and spare‑part usage within delegated budgets.
Communication, reporting and stakeholder engagement
  • Present commissioning status, technical issues, and acceptance results to principals, regional operations, clients, and management; issue RFIs, variation requests, and milestone reports.
Handover, training and close‑out
  • Prepare final handover documentation, operations/training sessions for client teams, and formal close‑out reports that record outstanding punch lists and warranty arrangements.
Self‑management and performance ownership
  • Maintain clear personal accountability for meeting milestones, KPIs, and escalation obligations; keep accurate, auditable records of decisions and approvals.
Qualification, Experience And Competencies
  • Qualified Electrical/Mechanical Engineer, Technologist, Technician or Equivalent.
  • Qualified Artisan [Electrical/Mechanic in relevant trade (e.g. Electrician or Diesel Mechanic]
Trade test
  • Supervisor Installation and Commissioning experience.
  • Minimum 10 years’ post-apprentice experience will be an advantage.
  • At least 10 years’ experience with installation and commissioning of generators or power generation systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of all power equipment and products.
  • Technical Representative/ Product Analyst experience will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated practical and theoretical training skills and sound interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Computer Literate (MS Office & applicable Caterpillar software applications).
  • Trouble shooting skills, problem solving skills and vast experience on failure analysis.
