Job Description
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform inspections as instructed by senior inspectors, administrators, operations supervisors, or branch managers of the Natural Resources, Agricultural, Trade team. To carry out division functions effectively and efficiently, focusing on field inspections and maintaining accurate records of daily inspections.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform daily operational activities under guidance from senior staff and managers.
- Attend inspections at various locations across South Africa, primarily in Cape Town.
- Inspect fish meal, fish oil loading, and discharges of fish or frozen fish.
- Witness and record fumigation of containers, weighings on weighbridges, and verify equipment.
- Ensure all equipment and consumables are clean and sanitized for inspections.
- Supervise the discharge of vegetable and palm oil vessels, perform volume and tonnage calculations.
- Coordinate documentation, equipment, and sampling labels prior to site visits.
- Conduct shore tank sampling, gauging, and temperature-based tonnage calculations.
- Inspect vessels loading or discharging grains or oilseeds per GAFTA / FOSFA standards.
- Assess container and tank cleanliness and suitability for storage and transport.
- Sample frozen meat products, supervise loading/discharge, and inspect cold storage for quality and insurance purposes.
- Inspect warehouse and cold storage facilities for various agricultural products.
- Witness loading/unloading of agricultural products and supervise weighing operations.
- Perform timber inspections according to standards, and travel as required across South Africa.
- Conduct risk surveys through warehouse inspections per client/bank requirements.
- Report job progress promptly via email, WhatsApp, etc., and prepare detailed field reports.
- Transport samples and equipment, maintain job files, and document all operational details.
- Assist with sample preparation, storage, and dispatch to labs or clients.
- Support continuous improvement of service quality, adhere to safety and quality standards, and maintain a clean working environment according to policies.
- Manage consumables, oversee casual staff or subcontractors, and submit weekly/monthly reports and expense claims.
- Work shifts, including weekends and holidays, and comply with all company policies and standards.
- Perform any additional duties assigned by supervisors, ensuring confidentiality, safety, and quality compliance.
COMPLIANCE & AUTHORITY
- Assist senior staff in performing tasks, report equipment issues, and cease unsafe or non-compliant work.
- Report hazards, environmental concerns, or quality issues, and initiate improvement requests when necessary.
- Implement and maintain quality systems and procedures.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 / Matric with Mathematics and Science.
- Valid driver’s license (minimum code 08).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Experience in inspection and sampling in agriculture and fishing industries.
- Willing to travel long distances; own vehicle required.
