Main Purpose of Job
To ensure the implementation and maintenance of a functional Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) programme at the hospital level.
Key Responsibility Areas
- Identify, mitigate and manage risks related to Infection Prevention and Control
- Investigate, analyse and interpret clinical data and act upon findings
- Ensure adherence to statutory bodies
- Identify training needs in the hospital and provide input in the development of training material
- Influence and equip hospital teams to understand and comply with IPC policies and principles
- Provide support with patient safety and quality improvement initiatives in the absence of the Patient Safety Manager
- Continuous professional development
Required Education
- Nursing qualification (degree or diploma)
Desired Education
- Formal IPC course / Post Graduate diploma in IPC
Required Experience
- 3-5 Years working in a hospital environment as a professional healthcare practitioner
Desired Experience
- 1–2 years IPC related work, supervision of a small team
Required Skills and Knowledge
- Conducting a system analysis of healthcare-associated infections and institute preventative measures
- Interpretation and application of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) definitions
- Auditing (e.g. compliance to hand hygiene and environmental cleaning audits)
- Computer literate (Microsoft Office)
- IPC surveillance and risk identification
- Report writing skills
- Identification, investigation and management of outbreaks
- Understanding and application of relevant IPC principles
- Data analysis and interpretation
- Knowledge of relevant statutory requirements and accreditation standards
- Knowledge and experience in quality improvement methodology
