Registered Nurse – ICU Qualified | Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal | Permanent

In this role, you will provide holistic, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill patients, ensuring safety, dignity, and the best possible clinical outcomes. You will work closely with doctors and a multidisciplinary team, managing complex cases, monitoring patients’ conditions, and responding quickly and confidently to changes. You will also play a key role in maintaining high clinical standards through adherence to protocols, accurate documentation, and continuous quality improvement.

What You Will Do
  • Deliver safe, comprehensive, and specialised ICU nursing care to critically ill patients
  • Monitor, evaluate, and document patient conditions, escalating changes timeously to the doctor
  • Administer medication in line with ethical, legal, and hospital policies and protocols
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and their families regarding treatment, progress, and expectations
  • Adhere to and promote unit-specific policies, clinical guidelines, and quality management systems
  • Advocate for patients by motivating acuity levels to case management and highlighting care limitations or risks
  • Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team to coordinate holistic patient care
  • Support, guide, and mentor colleagues to ensure an optimal skills mix within the ICU team
  • Manage stock in line with unit policies, ensuring cost-effective and responsible utilisation
  • Contribute to staff scheduling within flexi-hours and call systems to support safe staffing
  • Uphold infection prevention and control standards and SHEQ principles, including incident reporting
  • Ensure ICU equipment is checked, functional, and correctly utilised, reporting faults promptly
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant clinical records and documentation
What You Bring
  • Relevant Nursing Degree or Diploma and current registration with SANC as a Registered Nurse
  • Post-basic Diploma in Critical Care Nursing (ICU qualification) – essential
  • Proven nursing experience in an ICU environment
  • Strong clinical competence in the management of critically ill patients and use of specialised ICU equipment
  • Ability to work under pressure in a continuously changing, high-acuity environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with patients, families, doctors, and colleagues
  • Well-organised, energetic, and proactive approach with strong attention to detail
  • Commitment to professional development, continuous learning, and high-quality patient care
  • Willingness and ability to work flexi-hours, shifts, and participate in the unit’s call system
