Role Summary

The Professional Nurse / Clinical Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning and implementation of individualized, holistic and person‑centered nursing care for a patient in a high‑care/ICU environment. The nurse coordinates care within a multidisciplinary health team and applies scientifically based nursing theories in providing holistic care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a clinical resource assisting personnel to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document nursing care in the unit.
  • Ensure communication and interaction with family and health professionals regarding optimal patient care, acting as a patient advocate when necessary.
  • Maintain communication between nursing management and the unit to eliminate patient care problems and issues.
  • Assess, plan and implement advanced nursing care in a specialized field aligned with standard nursing procedures, SOPs and medical direction.
  • Initiate, direct and maintain emergency treatment (RESUS) as indicated to any patient/person in any ward/department of the hospital.
  • Interview patient and family to obtain relevant background information and problem identification; evaluate behaviour and assess immediate and long‑term needs.
  • Participate as a professional member of the multidisciplinary team in evaluating, developing and implementing health care plans and treatment regimes.
  • Cover rounds with physicians/medical practitioners to review condition of patients; develop nursing care plans.
  • Evaluate patient care needs, initiate individualized nursing care plans and coordinate patient services.
  • Prepare day/night shift documentation reflecting patient status, patient/staff ratio and problems.
  • Communicate with the unit manager to keep them informed of activities and problems.
  • Perform any related tasks as requested.
  • Provide input and standards in formulating patient care policy and procedures in the hospital.
  • Ensure the provision of a safe, clean and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Optimize and maintain quality, effective and safe nursing care within the assigned budget.
  • Evaluate, set standards and monitor safe utilisation of supplies and equipment.
  • Actively participate in team goals, collaborating with other departments and clinical facilitation for staff development.
  • Co‑ordinate with the Clinical Facilitation Department and other multidisciplinary team members to meet educational needs of staff.
  • Assist in mentoring and evaluation of learning experiences for nursing staff and students.
  • Conduct in‑service training and orientation of new staff in the unit, and advise staff on current and revised policies and procedures.
  • Allocate staff members in a manner that promotes optimal use of staff to meet patient needs; adjust staff levels to provide for acuity level needs.
  • Maintain effective communication and interaction within the unit, with other team members and the public, fostering good interpersonal and public relations.
  • Adopt electronic patient records, e‑scripts and clinical orders to improve patient care delivery.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council or equivalent (NQF Level 7).
  • Post‑qualification in Critical Care.
  • Previous nursing experience in high‑care/ICU environment essential.
  • Previous private healthcare experience essential.
  • Capacity to implement and maintain standards of health practice required from all accredited bodies and applicable health legislation.
  • Thorough knowledge of general/specialised nursing theory and practice.
  • Extensive knowledge of modern nursing care principles and advanced ICU nursing practice.
