Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an experienced Environmental Conservation Project Lead to advance biodiversity initiatives around Richards Bay. The role blends remote project management with on-the-ground community engagement and field work across the Richards Bay region.

The ideal candidate holds a Masters or PhD in Environmental Science and 6+ years of conservation project leadership, with GIS proficiency, stakeholder engagement, and budget oversight.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD in Environmental Science, Ecology, Conservation Biology, or closely related field.
• Minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in environmental conservation project management.
• Strong understanding of ecological principles, conservation challenges, and SA environmental legislation.
• Demonstrated experience in leading complex projects, managing budgets, and supervising teams.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Proficiency in GIS software, environmental modeling tools, and data analysis software.
• Experience working with local communities and building consensus for conservation initiatives.
• Ability to work effectively in a hybrid model, balancing remote work with regular field visits and community engagement in Richards Bay.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, planning, and implementation of diverse environmental conservation projects (e.g., habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring, waste reduction).
• Manage project budgets, timelines, and resources efficiently to ensure successful project delivery.
• Conduct field assessments, data collection, and analysis to inform project strategies and measure impact.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with local communities, government agencies, conservation partners, and other stakeholders in Richards Bay.
• Organize and facilitate community workshops, educational programs, and volunteer events related to conservation efforts.
• Prepare detailed project reports, scientific publications, and grant proposals.
• Supervise and mentor project staff, interns, and volunteers involved in conservation activities.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental regulations and organizational policies.
• Contribute to the strategic development of the organization's conservation programs and outreach efforts.
