Job description
Key Responsibilities
  • Fire Safety Planning & Compliance: develop and sign off fire protection plans in compliance with SANS, municipal by-laws, and building regulations.
  • Ensure fire plans address occupancy classification, fire resistance ratings, means of escape, and fire load calculations.
  • Integrate fire safety into design reviews, construction phases, and operational readiness assessments.
  • Legal Sign-Off & Certification: issue fire rational designs, compliance reports, and certificates of approval using ECSA registration number; serve as accountable signatory for all fire safety documentation submitted to municipal authorities and fire departments.
  • Municipal & Fire Department Liaison: act as the primary liaison with City Council Fire Departments and Building Control for plan approvals and inspections; represent ASPI in fire safety hearings, compliance meetings, and emergency planning forums.
  • Major Hazard Installation (MHI) Oversight: lead MHI assessments in collaboration with Approved Inspection Authorities (AIAs).
Regulatory Compliance

Ensure compliance with the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Substances, MHI Regulations, and NEMA. Support the development of emergency response plans and fire scenario modelling.

Facility Fire Surveys & Risk Assessments
  • Conduct internal fire risk assessments, fire load evaluations, and facility fire safety audits.
  • Recommend and oversee implementation of fire suppression systems, detection systems, gas suppression, and deluge systems.
  • Ensure fire equipment is maintained, tested, and compliant with SAQCC and SANS standards.
Internal Capacity Building
  • Mentor and train HSE Officers, maintenance teams, and project engineers on fire safety principles.
  • Support SAQCC certification of internal staff to enable in‑house inspections and reduce outsourcing costs.
  • Develop and deliver fire safety awareness programs, drills, and competency assessments.
Building Appointment & Accountability
  • Hold fire safety accountability under the National Building Regulations as the designated Competent Person.
  • Ensure all fire‑related building elements are compliant from design through to occupancy certification.
  • Participate in commissioning, handover, and occupational readiness reviews for new and modified facilities.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Professional registration with ECSA as a Fire Engineer or relevant category (PrEng or PrTechEng).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in fire safety planning, design, and compliance in industrial or high‑risk environments.
  • Accreditation in fire rational design and SAQCC Fire Systems (advantageous).
  • Demonstrated experience with MHI assessments, hazardous chemical substances, and municipal fire compliance.
  • Strong working knowledge of SANS, National Building Regulations, OHS Act, and municipal fire codes.
  • Between 5–7 years of relevant experience.
